CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M's
Brock Mishak scored a career-high 31 points on Thursday night as the Buffs rallied from deficits to close regulation as well as in overtime for a 93-91 victory over the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas at the Steinke Center in Line Star Conference action.
WT opened the first half with a strong offensive display, highlighted by a series of three-pointers.
Brock Mishak and
Jailyn Sledge each contributed with key scores from beyond the arc, helping to establish an early lead. The Buffs capitalized on Tex. A&M-Kingsville's turnovers, turning defensive stops into scoring opportunities.
Fontaine Williams facilitated the offense effectively, recording several assists that led to points. Despite Tex. A&M-Kingsville's efforts to close the gap with points from the paint and free throws, the Buffs maintained their lead at 41-38.
The Buffs began the second half with a strong offensive push, highlighted by
James Parlow Jr.'s three-pointer, extending its lead to 10 points early in the half.
Zach Brown and Williams contributed with assists, maintaining momentum for the Buffs. The team's defensive rebounding and consistent scoring, including Mishak's key three-pointer, helped sustain their advantage. However, Texas A&M-Kingsville responded with a series of successful possessions, narrowing the gap. Bryce Smith's three-pointer and Jadon Sautter's layup brought the Javelinas ahead as the half progressed. The Buffs' offense, led by Mishak, remained resilient, tying the game at 78.
WT took control in overtime with a crucial 3-pointer by Brown at 2:40, narrowing the gap to 83–81. Mishak's layup at 2:11 tied the score at 83, setting the stage for a tense finish. With less than a minute remaining, Williams delivered a pivotal 3-pointer to push WT ahead 90–89. As the clock wound down, Williams secured the win by sinking two free throws with four seconds left, extending the lead to 92–89. Despite Texas A&M-Kingsville's late efforts, the Buffs closed the overtime with a narrow 15–13 advantage, sealing a 93–91 victory.
Mishak scored 31 points, including seven 3-pointers, and collected eight rebounds. Williams added 17 points while recording eight assists. Brown tallied 15 points with five 3-pointers and grabbed five rebounds. Parlow Jr. contributed 15 points, shooting 6-for-9 from the field, and collected four rebounds.
WT closes out their South Texas road trip on Saturday afternoon with tipoff set for 2:00 p.m. against the Dustdevils of Texas A&M International in Laredo.
