Akintoye’s School Record Highlights the UNM Team Open

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M's Blessing Akintoye set a new school record on Friday in the women's 200m as the Lady Buffs and Buffs continued their indoor season at the UNM Team Open at the Albuquerque Convention Center.
 
The Lady Buffs delivered notable performances at the meet, highlighted by Abigail Abugire's victory in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.62. Akintoye secured a strong second-place finish in the 200-meter dash invitational, clocking in at 23.61. In the 400-meter dash invitational, Sandra Appiah placed fifth with a time of 54.60, while Asana Hamidu followed closely in ninth, finishing in 55.26.
 
The team's distance medley relay squad, consisting of Sarah Koomson, Akintoye, Abugire, and Kalkidan Vincendeau, earned second place with a time of 11:32.67. In the mile run, Koomson and Vincendeau placed third and fourth, respectively, with Koomson finishing in 4:54.87 and Vincendeau in 4:54.99. Naomi Addo also had a strong showing, capturing sixth place in the mile run and second place in the 3000-meter run, with times of 5:00.31 and 9:52.28, respectively.
 
The Buffs produced strong performances in multiple events, with James Dadzie leading the way in the Men's 60 Meter Dash. Dadzie secured second place in both the preliminaries and finals, clocking in at 6.64 seconds. Isaac Botsio was close behind, finishing third with times of 6.69 seconds in the preliminaries and 6.71 seconds in the finals. Kareem Small also showcased consistent results by placing fourth in both rounds, improving his time slightly from 6.80 to 6.79 seconds. 
 
In distance events, Adrian Legarreta excelled in the Men's 3000 Meter Run, claiming first place with a time of 8:17.56. Berry Cox and Tobias Ritter followed, securing second and third places with times of 8:29.61 and 8:29.67, respectively. In the Men's Triple Jump, Oyeyoni Oyewale-Johnson achieved a notable first-place finish with a leap of 15.29 meters, while Emmanuel Cuesta took fifth place with a 13.97-meter jump. These performances highlighted the Buffs' competitive edge across various disciplines within the meet.
 
The Buffs and Lady Buffs return to Albuquerque next weekend as they compete in the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
