Buffs Drop a Saturday Doubleheader to the #3 Rams

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Buffaloes fell twice to the rival #3 Angelo State Rams during a Saturday afternoon Lone Star Conference doubleheader at Wilder Park in Canyon, Texas.
 
The Buffs look to fend off an LSC series sweep tomorrow afternoon with the finale set for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch in Canyon.
 
GAME ONE
The Rams wasted little time getting on the board in the top of the first inning as Ethan Flodstrom started off the game with a solo homerun to right field followed later in the frame by a Lane Hutchinson RBI single to right field for the 2-0 lead.
 
WT responded in the bottom of the frame as Kory Schmidt singled to left center with two outs to plate Jovan Camacho to make it 2-1. Angelo State added to their lead in the top of the third on a Hutchinson RBI single to left center with no outs followed later in the frame by a Brett Smajstrla two-run double to make it 5-1.
 
Angelo State added to their lead in the top of the sixth inning on a Jacob Guerrero double off of the wall in right center to score Flodstrom for the 6-1 lead. WT would cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth on a Dylan Fesperman sac fly to right field that score Kyle Micklus followed by a Seth Ochoa single to center that scored Ryan Camacho to make it 6-3.
 
The Buffs made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh inning as Jovan Camacho connected on his first homerun in Maroon & White with a two-run shot to right field with one out to plate Zac Rackham before a pair of groundouts ended the game, 6-5.
 
Max Lankford picked up the loss (4-3) for the Buffs, allowing five earned runs on nine hits with one walk and a strikeout in his 2.2 innings of work.
 
GAME TWO
The Rams got on the board in the top of the first inning on a Weston Valasek RBI walk with the bases loaded and no outs and a Hutchinson two-run single up the middle, Smajstrla tripled off the center field wall to score two followed by a Justin Harris RBI single for the 6-0 lead.
 
WT pushed across their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning on a Josh Zapata RBI single to left field that scored Dylan Fesperman, Rodric Black drove in Seth Ochoa with a single followed by a J. Camacho base hit that scored Zapata to make it 6-3.
 
Angelo State used the long ball to extend their lead in the top of the third inning on a Flodstrom grand slam to right center with no outs for the 10-3 lead. The Buffs cut into the advantage in the bottom of the frame on a Zapata two-run triple down the right field line at 10-5. 
 
ASU added to their lead again in the top of the fourth on a Christian Garnette sacrifice fly to score Tayten Tredaway for the 11-5 lead. Flodstrom stayed hot at the plate in the top of the fifth inning, lifting a leadoff solo shot to left center followed by two more Ram runs later in the frame for the 14-5 lead. 
 
ASU added to their lead again in the sixth with a Guerrero RBI single thru the left side followed by a Chase Pendley two-run double, the Rams weren't done yet as an RBI single from Hutchinson for the 18-5 lead. Guerrero drove in his second RBI of the nightcap in the seventh with a double to the gap in right center to make it 19-5.
 
Nathan Scott claimed the loss (4-3) for the Buffs, allowing six earned runs on four hits with one walk in his 0.1 innings of work.
