CANYON, Texas – The Buffaloes of West Texas A&M scored 37 combined runs in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader sweep of the Sul Ross State Lobos at Wilder Park in Canyon, Texas.
The Buffs and Lobos return to the diamond tomorrow as they close out the LSC weekend series with a doubleheader set for a Noon first pitch in Canyon.
GAME ONE
The Lobos got on the board first in the top of the first inning as Aaron Morales lifted a solo homerun down the right field line with two outs for the 1-0 lead. WT would respond in the bottom of the second inning as
Dylan Fesperman scored from third on a wild pitch to make it 1-1.
Seth Ochoa continued his hot streak at the plate in the third with an RBI double down the left field line to plate Fesperman and
Ryan Camacho. WT would blow the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning as they sent 14 hitters to the plate, scoring 10 runs on nine hits highlighted by two-RBI singles by
Rodric Black and
Jovan Camacho for the 13-1 lead.
The Buffs would add to their lead in the home half of the fifth as Ochoa lifted a solo homerun to right field with two outs followed by a
Josh Zapata RBI triple to center and a wild pitch to make it 16-1. WT plated another run in the sixth on a
Ken Hemmer sac fly to center that scored J. Camacho for the 17-1 lead.
Matt Milner picked up the win (3-1) for the Buffs, allowing one earned run on three hits with two walks and nine strikeouts in his 5.0 innings of work while
Teddy Judkins tossed the final two frames, allowing just three hits with two walks and a strikeout.
GAME TWO
Sul Ross started out the scoring in the nightcap with a two-run single to left field by Brock Rogers for the 2-0 lead. The Buffs responded in the bottom of the frame with RBI base hits by R. Camacho,
Kory Schmidt and Zapata for the 4-2 lead.
The Lobos would get one back on a wild pitch in the second that scored Corbin Dube before WT responded with three more runs highlighted by a
Kyle Micklus solo homerun to right field for the 7-3 lead. The Buffs would add to their advantage in the third as Micklus doubled to center to score Black followed by a R. Camacho RBI single for the 9-3 lead.
The Buffs extended their lead again in the fourth as Zapata singled to left to score Ochoa followed by a J. Camacho two-run single to right that made it 12-3. WT wasn't done yet as extra-base hits by Ochoa, Zapata and J. Camacho ran the score to 17-3.
WT continued to click at the plate in the sixth as
Zac Rackham tripled to center field to score
Jake Alwine followed by a J. Camacho two-run single for the 20-3 lead. The Lobos wouldn't go down without a fight as they plated three runs in the top of the seventh before a fly ball to center ended the game, 20-6.
Nathan Scott claimed the win (3-1) for the Buffs, allowing three runs (one earned) on two hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in his 5.0 innings with
Gabe Torres tossing the last two frames.
