Buffs Ready for a Saturday Showdown at Midwestern State

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M hits the road for the final time this season as they travel to Wichita Falls, Texas to take on the Mustangs of Midwestern State in Lone Star Conference action with kickoff set for 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
 
A LOOK AT THE MUSTANGS
Midwestern State enters the weekend with an overall record of 2-7 with a 2-5 mark in Lone Star Conference action as they look to snap a three-game losing skid. The Mustangs are 1-3 so far this season at Memorial Stadium as they defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville (31-24) back on October 4th in Wichita Falls while being handed home losses by Western Colorado, Eastern New Mexico and Central Washington.
 
Last week's matchup at Western Oregon saw a scoreless game headed into the locker room at halftime before the Wolves exploded for 258 yards of offense and 31 points in the second half on their way to a 31-3 win in Monmouth.
 
The Mustangs average 380.2 yards of total offense per game this season with 263.2 of those coming thru the air as MSU ranks 28th in the country in passing offense. Midwestern State has scored 218 total points this season to average 24.22 per game while allowing 38.44 per contest, MSU has been outscored 299-118 during their seven losses this season.
 
Midwestern State has struggled to find consistency at the quarterback position this season with five different signal callers seeing snaps over the first nine contests. Sean Jastrab enters the weekend as the starter on the depth chart as the junior from Walnut, California has completed 73-of-118 passes for 762 yards and a touchdown to go along with two interceptions.
 
Reginald Williams and Jaden Coulter have been the featured backs in the MSU offense as they have combined for 669 yards and four touchdowns. Williams, a freshman from Montgomery, Texas, leads the team with 376 yards and two scores on 62 carries. Sophomore wide receiver Demonte Greene is the go-to weapon on the outside, catching 54 passes for 740 yards and six touchdowns. Greene ranks 22nd in the nation in receiving yards while sitting 16th in receptions per game, 24th in yards per game and 38th in all-purpose yards.
 
Noah Bustard anchors the Midwestern State defense as the sophomore linebacker from Omaha, Nebraska has registered a team-best 54 total tackles (24 solo) with 2.5 sacks to go along with a pass breakup and a fumble recovery.
 
MSU HEAD COACH RICH RENNER
Rich Renner is in his second season at the helm of the Midwestern State football program after serving as the Defensive Coordinator for the Mustangs from 2008-23. Renner has spent 18 years on staff at Midwestern State, being elevated to the 13th head coach in school history on December 10, 2023.
 
Renner had mentored seven All-Americans, 23 All-Region selections, and 23 All-LSC First Team performers during his time in Wichita Falls. The Cincinnati native is no stranger to Canyon as he spent time as a linebackers and defensive line coach at WT from 2000-05. Renner played collegiately at the University of Louisville.
 
THE SERIES
The Buffs lead the all-time series 22-15 against the Mustangs dating back to the 1947 campaign with WT wining the last five meetings. The Buffs are 10-7 all-time at Memorial Stadium in Wichita Falls. 
 
Last year's meeting saw the Buffalo defense allow 269 yards of total offense in a 17-12 victory over Midwestern State on Senior Night in Canyon. 
 
WEEK 10 MATCHUPS
Week 10 will once again feature all league 10 teams in action with five conference matchups all on Saturday. The Buffs travel to Wichita Falls while Angelo State hosts Western Oregon, Eastern New Mexico takes on UT Permian Basin in Midland with Central Washington making the long road trip to Alpin. Western New Mexico hits the road to battle the Javelinas in South Texas.
 
TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE REWIND
The Buffaloes put up 493 yards of total offense on Saturday afternoon as they outlasted the Texas A&M-Kingsville Javelinas, 53-48 in a Lone Star Conference shootout at Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium in Canyon.
 
RJ Martinez completed 30 of 39 passes for 400 yards and five touchdowns, adding 48 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown. Sean Johnson collected 11 receptions for 100 yards and one touchdown, showcasing his receiving ability. Defensively, Jamel Acosta-Lewis intercepted two passes, contributing to the team's defensive efforts. Ashton Reynolds recorded five tackles, one sack, and returned a fumble recovery for a 25-yard touchdown.
 
STARTING FAST
The Buffaloes have scored points on their first possession of the game in seven of the first nine games this season, averaging 5.6 plays and 51.3 yards per opening possession. West Texas A&M has received the opening kickoff in eight of the first nine contests, averaging 1:41 of clock time per opening possession.
 
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The Buffaloes hit the road for the final time this season on Saturday as they travel to Wichita Falls. In total West Texas A&M has played in three different time zones and will have travelled 3,054 miles during five road games this season.
 
LSC WEEKLY HONORS
West Texas A&M's RJ Martinez and Jamel Acosta-Lewis were honored for their efforts on the gridiron on Monday as the pair of Buffs claimed weekly Lone Star Conference Football recognition. It is the first time this season Acosta-Lewis has been named Defensive Player of the Week while Martinez claimed his third Offensive Player of the Week honor.
 
LSC NEWS & NOTES
With two weeks remaining in the regular season, No. 8 Central Washington remains atop the Lone Star Conference football standings at 7-0 and has won six straight games.
 
The Wildcats (8-1 overall), who have won seven straight games, topped No. 16 Angelo State in a battle of ranked teams. No. 20 UT Permian Basin, Western Oregon, West Texas A&M and Eastern New Mexico also won in Week 9. WOU increased its win streak to five games in a row. 
 
Week 10 will feature all 10 teams in action with five conference matchups on Saturday. If CWU defeats Sul Ross State, it would clinch at least a share of the LSC title. The two play at 7 p.m. CT in Alpine, Texas. Second-place WOU (7-2, 6-1 LSC) travels to San Angelo, Texas, to face Angelo State at 6 p.m. CT. If CWU and WOU each prevail, it would set up a Week 11 showdown between the two in Monmouth, Ore.
 
WT is leading the league in total offense at 454.7 yards per game, followed by UTPB (439.1) and Texas A&M-Kingsville (433.9). CWU is scoring a league-high 44.9 points per game.
 
UTPB has the conference's top-rated defense, allowing just 284.8 yards per game. CWU (339.7), followed by ASU (346). Opponents are scoring just 16.8 points per game against UTPB, which leads the league.
 
UTPB is the least penalized team in the league, averaging just 45.3 yards per game.
 
HEAD COACH JOSH LYNN
Josh Lynn is now in his third season at the helm of the West Texas A&M Football program after being named the 29th head coach in WT history. Lynn, widely regarded as one of the nation's up-and-coming head coaches, came to Canyon following six seasons at the University of Nebraska-Kearney where he led the Lopers to an overall record of 35-25 including a run to the Second Round of the 2021 NCAA Playoffs.
 
NEW FACES ON THE SIDELINE
WT Football welcomes four new faces to the full-time coaching staff as Justin Bane was named the new Offensive Coordinator for the Buffs. Mike Bethea will work with the linebackers while Adrian Duncan (running backs) and Cole McDowell (tight ends) also joined the offensive staff. Justin Richter was promoted to Defensive Coordinator in January following two seasons as the defensive backs/co-special team coordinator for the Buffs.
 
LSC PRESEASON POLL
The Buffaloes have been tabbed sixth in the 2025 LSC Preseason Poll announced during the league's annual Media Day in McKinney, Texas.
 
Defending LSC champion Angelo State claimed 23 of the possible 30 first place votes for a total of 292 points to sit atop of the poll followed by Central Washington (four first place, 257), UT Permian Basin (two first place, 229), Texas A&M-Kingsville (one first place, 211), West Texas A&M (157), Midwestern State (139), Eastern New Mexico (88), Western New Mexico (53), Sul Ross State (51).

Saturday night's contest will be broadcasted on FloCollege. The LSC and FloSports reached a historic agreement in August of 2024 for the largest streaming rights deal in NCAA Division II history. West Texas A&M Athletics announces the return of radio broadcasts for the 2025-26 campaign. 
 
Members of Buff Nation will now be able to listen to Kent Johnson, Lucas Kinsey and Brice Sheets in partnership with Alpha Media. Football pregame begins 30 minutes prior to kickoff. Thursday night's broadcast is available online (GoBuffsGo.com / KGNCNewsNow.com) as well as locally in the Texas Panhandle on 710 AM and 97.5 FM.
 
AIRING IT OUT
The new-look West Texas A&M offense has put up impressive numbers so far during the 2025 campaign. Senior quarterback RJ Martinez has completed 216-of-336 passes for 2,854 yards and 23 touchdowns thru nine games. That is the most passing yards by a WT quarterback since Preston Rabb in 2014 (2,912 yards) and the most touchdowns since Dustin Vaughan in 2013 (53 touchdowns).
