#14 Wildcats Start Fast in a 45-3 Late Night Win Over the Buffs

CANYON, Texas – The #14 Wildcats of Central Washington scored on their first two possessions of the night following a three-hour weather delay on their way to a 45-3 Lone Star Conference victory over West Texas A&M at Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium in Canyon.

The Wildcats marched down the field on their first drive of the night as a nine-play drive was capped off by a 12-yard rushing touchdown by Tyler Flanagan for the early 7-0 lead. CWU made a big play on defense on WT's ensuing possession as a Buffalo fumble setup a short drive by the Wildcats as Flanagan found the endzone again to make it 14-0.

Central Washington looked to add to their lead early in the second quarter but a pair of missed field goals kept it at 14-0. The Wildcats came up with another big play on defense later in the period as 2023 Harlon Hill finalist Tanner Volk picked off a Sean Johnson pass and took it 76 yards the other way for the 21-0 lead. CWU executed an onside kick following the score as they extended their lead with a Wyatt Redding 45-yard field goal to make it 24-0.

The Wildcats started the second half with another long scoring drive as they used 10 plays to cover 75 yards capped off by an eight-yard touchdown pass from Kennedy McGill to Camden Loidhamer for the 31-0 lead. CWU extended their lead late in the third quarter as an 88-yard drive was finished off by a seven-yard touchdown on the ground by Flanagan.

The Buffs responded in the fourth quarter as a 45-yard scamper by Johnson setup a 33-yard field goal by Preston Gregg to make it 38-3. The Wildcats answered back as a 54-yard completion by Caleb Christensen on third and long setup an eight-yard score on the ground by Justice Taylor for the 45-3 lead.

Johnson finished the night completing 7-of-16 passes for 73 yards and an interception to go along with 11 carries for 83 yards on the ground. Tre'Jon Henderson carried the ball 12 times for 50 yards while Tyrie Tipton caught a pair of passes for 22 yards. Defensively, Preston Steszewski led the way with nine tackles followed by David Jeffery with seven.

The Buffs hit the road next weekend as they make a 1,700-mile road trip to Monmouth, Oregon to take on the Wolves of Western Oregon with kickoff set for 3:00 p.m. CT at McArthur Field. WOU picked up a 39-17 victory in Alpine against Sul Ross State earlier in the day.
