Nick Marshall picked up his 20
th career victory on Friday afternoon as the #19 Buffaloes claimed a 5-3 victory in the Lone Star Conference series opener with the St. Edward's Hilltoppers at Wilder Park in Canyon.
The Buffs jumped out to an early lead as
Ryan Camacho singled up the middle with no outs to score
Rodric Black followed by a
Kory Schmidt RBI single thru the left side to plate
Kyle Micklus for the 2-0 lead. SEU responded in the top of the second as Hunter Conner grounded out to second to score Dillon Flores to make it 2-1.
WT added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning as Micklus grounded a ball down the first base line and doubled off of the bag to score
Josh Zapata for the 3-1 lead. The Buffs added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth, putting pressure on the SEU defense with a double steal with one out as an errant throw plated
Elijah Batista to make it 4-1.
The Hilltoppers registered their first hit of the afternoon with one out in the fifth as Weston Symes doubled to right field before a great play in the gap by Zapata and a strikeout to keep it 4-1. The Buffs added to their lead in the sixth as Black singled to center with two outs to score
Glenn Noronha for the 5-1 lead.
SEU cut into the lead in the top of the seventh with one out as Trevor Sebek singled to center to drive in Symes followed by a Nicholas Anderson RBI single up the middle to make it 5-3.
The Buffs tied a program record with eight stolen bases, marking the third time in school history swiping eight bags and the first since April 29, 2016 against Eastern New Mexico.
Marshall picked up the win (1-0) for the Buffs, allowing two earned runs on two hits with five walks and eight strikeouts in his 6.1 innings of work.
Douglas Rojas claimed his first save of the season with a pair of strikeouts in the final frame.
Marshall becomes the third player in program history to reach 20 career victories, breaking a tie with Chris Carson (1996-97) for the third most wins in WT history to trail only Joe Corbett (23, 2018-19) and Jason Patrick (22, 1994-97).
