DALLAS, TX- The No. 3 Lady Buffs battled the UT Tyler Patriots in four sets to come out with their first Lone Star Conference win of the season (25-19, 24-26, 25-18, 30-28). The Lady Buffs are now 1-1 in LSC play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lady Buffs took an early lead in the first set and ran away with it to finish out 25-19. There was a tie in kills at 14 for both the Lady Buffs and Patriots but the Lady Buffs had 12 less attempts to hit a .250 clip as a team.
The second set saw the Patriots take an early lead and keep it all the way until 19-24. The Lady Buffs would go on a 5-0 run of points to tie it up at 24-24, the first tie of the set. The Patriots came out from their second timeout to finish it with back-to-back points and tied up the match 1-1.
The third set was dominant for the Lady Buffs as they switched up the front row by bringing in freshmen
Riess Griffith and
Haylee Hurtado along with junior
Kelsey Carpenter. Carpenter commanded a solo block on the outside and gave momentum to the Lady Buffs. The team would go on to defeat the Patriots 25-18.
The Lady Buffs started down 0-4 before making a 4-0 run of their own in the fourth. They would continue having the lead before the Patriots came back within one point at 16-15. The Lady Buffs called their first timeout of the set and came out to take the next two points with a Patriots hitting error and block by
Ainsley Malis and
Carly Evetts. Both teams battled with six score ties once the Lady Buffs hit 22 points. The final two points came down at the last score tie of 28-28 when the Patriots had a service error followed by a kill from
Emma Becker.
BY THE NUMBERS
Outside hitter,
Emma Becker, and middle blocker,
Carly Evetts, led in kills with 19 apiece. Evetts hit a .486 clip while Becker was at .349.
Ainsley Malis had a career high 44 assists while adding a career high two blocks on the match.
Bryli Contreras led in digs with 28 and freshman
Riess Griffith led with two aces.
