No. 1 Lady Buffs Open with Two Wins at the BritKare Lady Buff Classic

CANYON, Texas – The No. 1 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M led off the 2023 season 2-0 after defeating East Central (25-16, 25-, 23-25, 25-) and UC-Colorado Springs (25-18, 25-10, 25-22) on Friday.

By the Numbers
The Lady Buffs hit .221 in the morning with 53 kills on 140 attempts with 49 assists, 56 digs, 10 blocks and 10 service aces.  ECU totaled 43 kills on 142 attempts to hit .092 with 40 assists, 58 digs, and 12 blocks. 

Taytum Stow led the Lady Buffs with 11 kills followed by Torrey Miller with 10 while Ainsley Malis recorded 24 assists.  Senior Carly Evetts was responsible for half of the Lady Buffs 10 blocks to go along with Bryli Contreras 19 digs as the libero. 
 
Odalys Gonzalex recorded a match-high 20 kills for the Tigers with Brooke Sarahina dishing out 19 assists with one service ace.  Macey McAmis had a team-high 19 digs while Ashleigh Miller led the match with six blocks.   
 
Milestones
  • Carly Evetts had a career-high six blocks
  • Lady Buffs moved to 40-8 all-time in season openers; 35-3 in season openers at The Box

By the Numbers
WT tallied 34 kills on 86 swings with 12 errors to hit .256 as a team to go along with 34 assists, five service aces, 40 digs and five blocks.  The Grizzlies registered 33 kills on 102 attempts with 21 errors while totaling 36 digs, 30 assists, four blocks and two aces. 
 
Junior Camy Jones recorded eight kills and three block to lead the match to go along with three blocks from Carly Evetts. While Blair Moreland dished out 20 assists.  Canyon product Bryli Contreras had 12 digs. 
 
Cindy Garcia had ten kills to lead ASU while Remi Vargas had 17 assists.  On defense, Ava Saiers had ten digs and Natalie Gallegos led the match with four blocks. 
 
Milestones
  • Blair Moreland recorded her first double-double of the season (20 A, 11 D)
  • WT led off the season 2-0 for the third straight year in a row
  • WT improves their win streak to six over Adams State; leads all-time series 13-3 
  • WT continues a 28 game winning streak
 
COMING UP NEXT
The Lady Buffs will complete the BritKare Lady Buff Classic tomorrow, September 2, with a match against St. Mary's at 2:00 p.m. before going head-to-head with Davenport in the tournament finale at 7 p.m.
 
The matchup against the Davenport will feature schedule poster for fans to take and an autograph session to follow immediately after the match.
