Rufus' Walk-Off Home Run Steals Series from Eagles

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M softball team trailed for four and a half innings on Saturday afternoon before scoring four answered to win the Lone Star Conference series against Oklahoma Christian. The Lady Buffs entered the final inning tied with the Eagles before Brittni Rufus ended the game with a solo home run to right.

Oklahoma Christian started quickly once again, scoring three runs to start the game. The Eagles' Brooklin Bain doubled off the left field wall off Lady Buffs' starting pitcher Kyra Lair to start the inning. Lair locked in after the double, retiring the pair of hitters on a fly out and a lineout. A walk and hit by pitch loaded the bases for the Eagles with two outs. Oklahoma Christian changed the score with one swing of the bat when Boo Robinson doubled into the gap in right-center to clear the bases.

The game went scoreless into the bottom of the fifth inning when WT started its comeback. A one-out walk by Gabriella Valforte placed a runner on for the Lady Buffs when Nikki Warren pinch-ran for Valforte. Rufus followed the walk with a bunt single placed perfectly in front of home plate where she moved to second after the Eagles left the base open. Gabie McConnell wasted no time scoring Warren from third and Rufus from second. Oklahoma Christian escaped the inning after McConnell's RBI single, but the game entered the sixth with a one-run separation.

Down by a run in the sixth, WT manufactured the tying score after Diana Murtha singled into left field. Madison Johnson exchanged places with Murtha on a fielder's choice where Johnson was erased on Julie Guzman's fielder's choice. After Guzman reached first, the junior caught Oklahoma Christian off guard, stealing second base. The extra base proved to be crucial as Braeland Booth lined a single into left center field to score Guzman.

The Eagles threatened to score in the top of the seventh after a two-out single and walk. Lair, going the distance, retired the final hitter on a pop out to second base and send it to the home half of the inning. Rufus got down to two strikes in the at bat before checking her swing on the next pitch. The second life for Rufus ended up being the difference-maker as the junior blasted a solo shot over the right field wall.
