PORTALES, N.M. – The West Texas A&M scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to hold off the upset-minded Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds, 6-4. The Lady Buffs improved to 24-4 overall and 15-4 in Lone Star Conference play after the victory.
Eastern New Mexico jumped on the board in the bottom of the first to take an early advantage. The Greyhounds capitalized on a WT error to start the inning, leading to a stolen base. A groundout moved the leadoff runner to third where an RBI single by Alondra Vasquez brought home the game's first run.
The Lady Buffs went scoreless into the top of the third before the offense woke up on
Gabie McConnell's leadoff single. McConnell swiped second before advancing to third on a passed ball. On a full count,
Emilee Boyer tied the game up with a sharp single into left-center field. After an out and a walk,
Megan Guericke launched her second home run of the season. The three-run blast put WT up by three runs, extending the lead to 4-1.
In the fourth, the Lady Buffs looked to have retired the side in order, but a two-out single extended the inning for the Greyhounds. Boyer, pitching for WT, came one pitch away from holding Eastern New Mexico off the scoreboard until a double down the line scored another run. The Greyhounds tacked on another run after the double with a single and error to force a Lady Buff pitching change. After the change, ENMU tied the game on a deep single by Ashley Nickerson.
With a runner on third and two outs, Lair forced a line drive to center field where the Greyhounds looked to have taken the lead.
Ruby Salzman came up big to keep the game tied as the senior made the diving catch in the gap to end the ENMU side. The Lady Buffs regained the lead in the top of the seventh after
Brittni Rufus singled and McConnell reached to start the inning. On a 1-1 count, Salzman bounced a ball up the middle, allowing Rufus to race her way around the bases and score. WT added an additional run when
Diana Murtha singled home Salzman. In the home half of the seventh, Lair shut down the Greyhound lineup and prevented an ENMU comeback.
The Lady Buffs and Greyhounds finish the three-game set with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 1 p.m. Central in Portales.
