Ochoa’s Walkoff Highlights a Saturday Doubleheader Split

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M Buffaloes ran their win streak to seven games in Saturday's doubleheader opener on a Seth Ochoa walkoff single in extra-innings before WT dropped the nightcap to the UT Permian Basin Falcons in Lone Star Conference action at Wilder Park.
 
The Buffs and Falcons close out the LSC series tomorrow afternoon as first pitch of the finale is set for 1:00 p.m. in Canyon.
 
GAME ONE
The Falcons plated their first runs of the series in the top of the first inning as Brent Rigtrup singled thru the left side with one out to plate Mason Hamlin followed later in the frame by a Cooper Ciesielski two-run double down the left field line for the 3-0 lead.
 
WT answered in the bottom of the frame as Adam Becker doubled to right center to drive in Mike Manetta followed later in the frame by an Eddy Savoie RBI walk with the bases loaded and a Patrick Donovan sac fly to left to tie it up at 3-3. UTPB retook the lead in the second as Rigtrup drew a walk with the bases loaded and one out followed by a Jack Haggerty two-run single thru the right side for the 6-3 lead. 
 
WT cut into the lead in the fifth as Kory Schmidt singled to right center with the bases loaded and one out to drive in Manetta followed by an Eddy Savoie sac fly to right and a Patrick Donovan single to left to make it 6-6. The Buffs weren't done yet as Dylan Fesperman doubled down the left field line with two outs to give WT the 8-6 lead. The Falcons answered in the top of the sixth as Carson Johnson lifted a sac fly to the warning track in right field to plate Christian Rodriguez followed by a Haggerty RBI single to left with two outs to tie up the game at 8-8. 
 
Becker gave the Buffs the lead again in the home half of the frame as the senior crushed a solo shot into the parking lot for his 10th of the season for the 9-8 lead. UTPB answered again in the top of the seventh as Hamlin reached on an infield single to score Landon Gallegos with two outs. WT would load the bases in the bottom of the ninth with two outs before Seth Ochoa would end the game on an RBI single to the gap in right center for the 10-9 victory.
 
Tyler Cornett picked up the win (1-0) for the Buffs, allowing one earned run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts in his 3.1 innings of relief. 
 
GAME TWO
UTPB started off the scoring in the nightcap in the top of the second as Austin Hall drove in Bigtrup with an infield RBI single with one out followed by an RBI single to center by Rodriguez for the 2-0 lead. WT responded in the bottom of the frame as Schmidt connected on a solo shot the other way to lead off the inning to make it 2-1.
 
The Falcons added to their lead in the top of the third as Bigtrup singled to center to plate Johnson followed by a Stephen MacKenzie safety squeeze for the 4-1 lead. Becker would continue his hitting ways in the bottom of the third as the senior from Midland doubled off of the center field wall with two outs to drive in Manetta followed by a Will Fuenning RBI single to left center, WT wasn't done yet as Schmidt tripled to center to plate Fuenning to make it 4-4.
 
UTPB retook the lead in the fourth as Michael Clapperton singled to right with no outs to drive in a run followed by Johnson sac fly to the wall in right field. The Falcons added to their lead in the fifth as Clapperton singled up the middle with two outs to drive in Hamlin followed by a Johnson RBI triple and a wild pitch to make it 9-4.
 
The Buffs cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Donovan doubled to left field to score Savoie and make it 10-5. The Falcons would answer in the top of the seventh on a Rigtrup RBI double to the gap in right center with one out to make it 11-5.
 
Gavin Pringle picked up the loss (6-1) for the Buffs, allowing two earned runs on three hits with one walk and two strikeouts in his 1.2 innings of relief.
