CANYON, Texas – The #17 Buffs of West Texas A&M connected on four homeruns in the nightcap to come away with a Lone Star Conference split during Saturday's doubleheader action at Wilder Park in Canyon, Texas.
The Buffs look to split the series on Sunday afternoon as first pitch of the finale is set for 1 p.m. in Canyon.
GAME ONE
The Buffs got on the board first in the home half of the third inning as
Cameron Loy would double to center followed by an errant pickoff attempt and a wild pitch to make it 1-0. WT took advantage of a Hogs error with two outs in the fourth as
Eddy Savoie singled home
Kory Schmidt to run the lead to 2-0.
Kingsville responded in the top of the fifth as Nick Wolff lifted a grand slam down the left field line with one out for the 4-2 lead. TAMUK struck again in the top of the sixth as Wolff connected on a three-run blast to right center to extend the lead to 7-2.
WT cut into the lead in the home half of the sixth as Savoie lifted a sac fly to center with the bases loaded to score
Adam Becker but the Buffs would strand the bases loaded to head to the seventh trailing 7-3. The Javelinas added to their lead in the top of the seventh with a Jaden Cavazos RBI single to right followed by a Garrett Thompson RBI single to left center to make it 9-3.
Isaac Keehn picked up the loss (1-1) for the Buffs, allowing four earned runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts in his 4.2 innings of work.
GAME TWO
The Javelinas wasted little time getting on the board in the nightcap as Wolff connected on his third long ball of the day, this time a two-run shot to right center for the 2-0 lead.
The Buffs responded in the home half as Becker crushed a three-run shot to left center followed by a
Will Fuenning two-run homerun to center, WT wasn't done yet as Loy drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded followed by a
Ryan Johnson sac fly to right to make it 7-2.
WT added to their lead in the second as Savoie lifted a sac fly to center to score Schmidt, TAMUK answered in the top of the third with a Steven Bonuz RBI single up the middle with two outs followed by a two-run double down the left field line by Dalton Kramer to make it 8-3.
TAMUK continued to cut into the lead in the fourth as Shelby Becker singled up the middle with one out to plate Ivan Duarte followed by a Bonuz RBI walk with the bases loaded and a passed ball to tie the game before
Gavin Pringle settled in and stranded the bases loaded.
WT used the long ball again in the home half of the fourth inning as Becker and Fuenning connected on solo shots to left field to give the Buffs a 10-8 lead. The Buffs added to their lead in the fifth as Johnson lifted a sac fly to right with no outs followed later in the frame by a catcher's interference that plated
Bryant Bailey and an RBI walk by Savoie to run the lead to 13-8.
Kingsville wouldn't go down without a fight as Jacob Rosales singled thru the right side to plate Ramsey Amador with two outs followed by a Ramsey RBI single to left before a strikeout by
Tyler Cornett to close the inning.
Pringle picked up the win (1-0) on the mound for the Buffs, allowing two earned runs on three hits with one walk and four strikeouts during his 2.1 innings of relief, Cornett picked up his second save as the Shallowater product struck out one and allowed just one hit over the last 1.1 frames.
