#5 Lady Buffs Travel to Take on the Bulldogs

CANYON, TX- The No. 5 nationally ranked Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M (17-2, 7-1 LSC) will travel to Weatherford, Okla. to take on Southwestern Oklahoma (13-5, 7-2 GAC) for a mid-week friendly match-up on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. The match will not count towards conference play but will count towards overall wins and losses for the Lady Buffs and Bulldogs.

IN THE POLLS
The #5 Lady Buffs are the only LSC program represented in the national standings and have been in the top five in the nation for the past seven weeks. Angelo State is the only other LSC team receiving votes while three RMAC teams are ranked with MSU Denver (6th), Colorado Mesa (9th) and Regis (12th). Wayne State holds down the #1 spot in the nation followed by Concordia St. Paul, Tampa and Missouri-St. Louis. West Texas A&M only has two losses on the season with one of those coming from a five setter by national runner-up and #2 in the nation Concordia St. Paul. 
 
The Lady Buffs have been ranked consecutively for 21 weeks since the 2022 season to the current season. 
 
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE (Oct. 17 | 6 PM) 
The Southwestern Oklahoma State Bulldogs are led by head coach Josh Collins in his 12th season and has amassed 177 wins. The Bulldogs are sitting second in the Great American Conference with only two losses in conference (7-2)
 
The Bulldogs just defeated first seed, Harding, this past week in a four set (25-16, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16) win. The Bulldogs led in kills (60), blocks 12) and digs (100) against the Bisons. SWOSU's victory halted Harding's 29-match conference winning streak that dated back to the 2021 season. 
 
Junior outside hitter Lacy Mott has led the Bulldogs in kills (266) and kills per set (3.45). Defensively the Bulldogs are paced by freshman libero Jada Permenter. The Amarillo native has 352 digs on the season and set a career high against the Bison with 26 digs. The Bulldogs have four panhandle natives on the roster with defensive specialist Lauren DeSantiago, outside hitter Taryn Galt, Permenter and Canyon high graduate Zoey Sparks. 
 
The bulldogs are hitting .195 as a team, averaging 11.60 assists per set and digging approximately 16.40 balls per set. They have been holding their opponents to a .163 average hitting percentage.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs swept both Lone Star Conference opponents, Midwestern State and Texas Woman's, at home in The Box. 
The packed Box with 1,100 fans saw WT sweep MSU (25-12, 25-13, 25-17) then follow up the performance with a sweep of TWU (29-27, 25-15, 25-13). 
 
Torrey Miller displayed her prowess with a double-double against TWU (13 kills, 12 digs) and led the Lady Buffs in kills and digs. Sophomore Emma Becker led the Lady Buffs against the Mustangs with 11 kills hitting .625 on the match. 
Setter Ainsley Malis led with assists on both matches with 27 a piece, just narrowly missing the 30 mark by six assists. 
 
AROUND THE LONE STAR
The Lady Buffs are tied for second place in league play with Angelo State Rambelles. The University of Arkansas-Fort Smith is the only undefeated team in the LSC (6-0). The Lady Buffs will face the Numas this Friday in The Box for the top-seed in conference. 
 
The Dallas Baptist Patriots took their first losses in conference play against Texas A&M Kingsville and Texas A&M International this past weekend. The losses dropped the Patriots to a tie for third with the Texas Woman's Pioneers. The Pioneers took only their second loss in conference agains the Lady Buffs with their other loss being to Angelo State. 
 
Texas A&M Kingsville, Texas A&M International and St. Mary's round out the top eight in conference as the league swings into the second half of LSC play. 
 
WT HEAD COACH KENDRA POTTS
Kendra Potts begins her fifth season at the helm of Lady Buff Volleyball with an overall 108-22 (.830) record and 60-11 (.845) in league play.  Potts led her alma mater to the program's 4th NCAA National Championship after capturing the South Central Regional title to become the sixth head coach in program history to guide WT to the Elite Eight. Coach Potts was named the AVCA Division II National Head Coach of the Year following her 33-4 record and 26 game winning streak for the 2022 season.
 
UP NEXT
The Lady Buffs will continue onto Lone Star Conference play against University of Arkansas Fort Smith and Oklahoma Christian at home in The Box on Friday, Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. then on Saturday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m.
