NAMPA, Idaho – Kenny Brown scored two goals while assisting on another to help the West Texas A&M men's soccer defeat the Chaminade University Silverswords. The Buffs boost their record to 2-0-2 overall while Chaminade falls to 0-2.
The Buffs and Silverswords got out to a physical start, but it was WT who struck first on the scoreboard. After a foul inside the box, Brown stepped up and placed the penalty kick into the bottom right corner. The Buffs continued to keep the offensive pressure up following the goal, forcing a free kick outside the box a few minutes later. Five minutes after his first goal, Brown scored once again. After
Bryan Martinez backed the ball out of the box to Brown, the Liverpool, England native sent a high-arching ball towards the net. Brown's shot fell just under the crossbar as Chaminade goalkeeper Brandon Yasue attempted to make the save. The Buffs carried their two-goal lead into halftime.
WT pushed its lead to three only three minutes into the second half.
Giancarlo Saldana put a shot on frame after a cross from
Anthony Perea. Yasue stopped Saldana's shot but couldn't come up with the ball as it went straight to
Keaton Hartman for the finish. Following Hartman's goal, the Silverswords defense locked up the Buff attack, allowing just three shots until the 20-minute mark. With five minutes remaining, Brown received a ball back from
Adam Szostake inside the box. On Brown's centering pass,
Rotem Weiss tapped the ball into the back of the net for the 4-0 lead.
The Buffs held the Silverswords to just three shots on the net with none coming on net. WT placed 11 of its 23 total shots on goal.
WT returns to play on Saturday against Northwest Nazarene. The Buffs and Nighthawks face off on the NNU Soccer Field at 5:30 p.m.
