Buffs, No. 17 Eagles Draw On Saturday Night

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The West Texas A&M men's soccer team ended non-conference play with a 1-1 draw against the 17th-ranked Eagles of Oklahoma Christian. The Buffs moved to 2-2-4 overall on the season while the Eagles moved to 6-1-2 overall.

The Buffs and Eagles started slowly as both teams felt each other out. Through the first 10 minutes of the game, neither team registered a shot. It wasn't until the 26-minute mark that Kenny Brown attempted the contest's first shot. The Buffs first scoring chance came via a penalty kick in the 29th minute after an Eagles' defender took down Bryan Martinez in the box. Brown stepped up and buried the ensuing kick under the arm of Oklahoma Christian goalkeeper Fynn Koener. WT held the Eagles to just one shot in the first half as the Buffs went to the break with a one goal lead.

Like the first half, offensive chances were few and far between. Oklahoma Christian sent four shots towards the goal in the first 17 minutes of the half, but WT defenders blocked each opportunity. The Eagles best look at goal on the night came in the 70th minute as John Ighede fired a shot over the head of Asaf Kristal in goal but hit the crossbar. Oklahoma Christian equalized the score on a free kick with 12 minutes remaining. As Alejandro Colom sent the ball into the box, Alexandre Picoto Rodrigues used his head to find the back of the net.

WT faces another week break before starting conference play against Lubbock Christian on Oct. 1. The rematch between the Buffs and Chaps starts at 2:30 on The Pitch.
