CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with the Lubbock Christian Chaparrals at The Pitch on Saturday. The Buffs held a lead at the half but a Chaps goal in the second half leveled the score. With the draw, WT moves to 2-2-5 and 0-0-1 in the Lone Star Conference. Lubbock Christian went to 3-4-3, 0-0-1 in the LSC.
The Buffs and Chaps started physical with neither team able to gain an advantage. WT registered its first shot in the 11
th minute, putting pressure on LCU goalkeeper
Tom Miles. The Buffs' offensive play paid off in the 13
th minute as
Payne McKiver scored WT's lone goal of the game. After the Buffs placed a corner kick into the box, the Chaps looked to clear the ball away. LCU's attempt fell short as the ball went to the awaiting foot of McKiver who ripped a shot from the top of the box into the back of the net. WT continued its aggressive play but came up empty in the half. At the break, the Buffs held a 1-0 advantage on the scoreboard but a 9-1 lead in shots.
WT continued to apply pressure to the Lubbock Christian back line in the second half. The Buffs were unable to turn the chances into shots as the Chaps defense held strong. In the 65
th minute, LCU found a gap in the Buffs' box for an open shot. After receiving the ball near the penalty spot, Ezequiel Christian Fidabel turned and snuck a shot under the diving arm of
Asaf Kristal, leveling the score at one. Despite the tied score, WT continued to look for a go-ahead goal. The Buffs nearly found it with four and a half minutes remaining from
Kenny Brown. Brown, fresh into the game, found space at the corner of the 18-yard box where he let shot fly. The shot froze Miles in goal but rattled the post and out of danger for the Chaps. WT attempted to make a push in the final seconds but ran out of time.
The Buffs hit the road to continue conference play with UT Tyler. The Patriots host WT at 7 p.m.
