LUBBOCK, Texas – The West Texas A&M men's soccer team couldn't find an offensive rhythm as Lubbock Christian University defeated the Buffs, 2-1. The Chaparrals snap a three-game losing streak and move to 3-4-1 while the Buffaloes fell to 2-2-3.
The Buffs started the game by registering the first shot of game just 57 seconds into the first half. The shot by
Tanner Clements ended up being the only shot for WT until the 35:13 mark. While the Buffs opened the game with the first shot, the Chaps scored the game's opening goal. Lubbock Christian's Tariq Bakkali found Jeremy Chua streaking down the sideline. Chua took the ball into the box and put it around
Alfonso Aragon. The lone goal was all the two teams saw as the Chaps held a 1-0 advantage at halftime.
In the second half, Lubbock Christian sent a ball into the West Texas A&M box. Aragon came out to play the ball, but the Chaps were able to draw a foul. On the following penalty kick, Bakkali placed the ball under the diving hands of Aragon to double the Chaps' lead. The Buffs got another look at goal off the foot of Clements, but his shot sailed just over the crossbar.
Venancio Calderon followed up Clements' opportunity with a strike of his own, but Lubbock Christian's
Tom Miles made the save. The Buffs were able to break up the shutout in the 86
th minute as
Giancarlo Saldana found a leaping
Kenny Brown in the middle of the box. Brown put Saldana's cross away with his head to cut the lead in half. As the clocked counted down, the WT pressure increased. Despite having opportunities to score, the Buffs couldn't convert as time expired.
WT wraps up non-conference play with a match against Oklahoma Christian next Saturday. The Buffs and Eagles kick off at 7 p.m. at Dobson Field in Oklahoma City.
