Javelinas Use the Long Ball to Take the Series Opener, 13-1

CANYON, Texas – Texas A&M-Kingsville connected on a pair of homeruns in the first frame and never looked back as they handed the #5 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M a 13-1 run-rule setback during Lone Star Conference action on Friday night at Nolan Ryan Field in Kingsville, Texas.

The Javelinas jumped out to an early in the first inning lead as Nick Wolff connected on a two-run shot just inside of the foul pole down the right field line followed later in the frame by a Jake Chapman solo shot to left field for the 3-0 lead.

TAMUK would use the long ball again in the second as Shelby Becker sparked a two-out rally with a solo shot to left field followed by homers from Wolff and Chapman again to extend the lead to 7-0. Kyler Bumstead added to the Kingsville lead in the third with an RBI single to center followed by a Becker double down the left field line to score Bumstead and make it 9-0.

The Buffs would finally get on the board in the top of the fourth inning as Will Fuenning took the second pitch of the frame deep to left center field for his ninth homerun of the campaign to cut the lead to 9-1. The Javelinas would respond with four runs over the next two frames for a 13-1 victory.

Nick Marshall picked up the loss (9-2) on the mound for the Buffs, allowing seven earned runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts in his 2.0 innings of work. Ben Crist allowed six runs (four earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts over the next three frames followed by Dawson Cantwell making his WT debut, striking out one Javelinas in his one frame of relief.

The Buffs and Javelinas continue their Lone Star Conference series tomorrow afternoon with first pitch of a doubleheader scheduled for 2:00 p.m. in Kingsville.
