No. 11 Lady Buffs Set to Host 2022 Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament

CANYON, Texas – For the first time in eight years, the No. 11 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M are set to host the 2022 Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament at The Box in Canyon, Texas on Nov. 10-12. Top seed WT will take the No. 8 seed Angelo State Rambelles in the quarterfinals on Thursday night with first serve scheduled for 7:30 p.m. CT.
 
LIVE COVERAGE
Live stats will be available for all seven tournament matches provided by the WT Athletic Communications department. All seven volleyball championship games will be broadcast exclusively on the LSC Digital Network at www.lonestarconferencenetwork.com or the LSC Digital Network OTT app. Fans will be able to purchase an LSC Volleyball Championship Day Pass for $10 that provides access to all volleyball tournament games for 24 hours from the time of purchase. Passes will be available for purchase on each game day.

SCOUTING ANGELO STATE
ASU enters the tournament as the No. 8 seed after finishing the regular season 11-17 overall and 7-9 in league play to win the tiebreaker against Texas Woman's and Lubbock Christian. The Rambelles are 10-6 during the LSC postseason with 10 LSC Tournament titles, including four under head coach Chuck Waddington who has led the Belles to 10 straight NCAA South Central Regional. Waddington is 354-128 overall. 
 
Thursday match will mark the third meeting between the two teams this season with the Lady Buffs leading the season series, 2-0. WT leads the all-time series 61-28, including a 32-7 overall record in Canyon. The match will also be the first conference postseason since 2015. 
 
Sydney Mundkowsky leads the way with 220 kills on 563 swings with 91 attack errors to hit .229, averaging 2.86 kills per set. Laney Dale has guided the offense with 509 assists (5.09/set).  Caleigh Enax leads the back row with 435 digs to average 4.26 per frame while Marina Sanchez has totaled 84.0 blocks including 1.14 per set which ranks third in the LSC. 
 
A WIN WOULD
A win on Thursday would advance the Lady Buffs to the semifinals where they will face the winner of No. 4 UT Tyler – No. 5 Texas A&M-Kingsville. The semifinal matches are set for Friday, Nov. 11 at 5 and 7:30 p.m. If WT advances to the semifinals, they will play at 7:30 p.m. The championship match is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12. 
 
A LOOK AT THE BRACKET
Action starts on Thursday at 12 p.m. with No. 3 Texas A&M International against No. 6 St. Mary's followed by No. 2 DBU versus No. 7 UAFS at 2:30 p.m.  No. 4 UT Tyler meets No. 5 Texas A&M-Kingsville at 5 p.m., while No. 1 West Texas A&M faces No. 8 Angelo State in the 7:30 p.m. match.
 
WE'VE BEEN HERE BEFORE
The Lady Buffs will make the program's 28th LSC Tournament appearance on Thursday, which is the most by any LSC member. WT has recorded 16 tournament titles and has produced an overall 50-11 (.820) record during the tournament, including 16-1 in the finals. 
 
REGIONALLY RANKED
Top ranked MSU Denver stands first in the regional rankings for the second straight week with an undefeated 23-0 in-region record followed by WT, Regis, Colorado Mesa, Colorado School of Mines, DBU, UT Tyler, Colorado State-Pueblo, Texas A&M International, and Texas A&M-Kingsville.  
 
The 64-team field for the 2022 NCAA DII Volleyball Championships will be announced via an online selection show on NCAA.com following the LSC Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 13 at 9:30 p.m. CT. Winners of the Lone Star Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournaments will receive automatic bids with the final six spots being determined by the NCAA selection committee. 
 
OFF…DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Torrey Miller, a product of Brownwood, Texas registered dominating performances on both sides of the ball to earn LSC Defensive Player of the Week honors. She recorded two straight double-doubles on the weekend bringing her career total to 44. She had a team-high 29 (4.14/set) kills on the weekend while recording the second most digs with 27 (3.86/set) to go along with four blocks, one service ace and two assists.  She helped WT hold TAMIU to a .045 hitting percentage in the sweep.
 
THE NUMBERS
WT is hitting .254 as a team which ranks second in the Lone Star Conference while leading the league in points per set (18.0) and blocks per set (2.48) while also limiting opponents to hit just .130 which is the lowest in the league. 
 
The Lady Buffs are represented in the Top 10 of the LSC individual leaderboards of the with freshman Taytum Stow leading the league in blocks per frame (1.21), which ranks 10th in Division II.  Four Lady Buffs rank in the Top 15 in hitting percentage with Stow in third at .356 followed by Kayla Elliott (6th; .322), Emma Becker (13th; .281), and Torrey Miller (14th; .271).  
 
HOME DOMINANCE
WT houses one of the best home environments in the country across all of NCAA volleyball.  Built in 1951, the WTAMU Fieldhouse, best known as "The Box" is home to 20 Lone Star Conference Championships, 14 regional titles and three NCAA Division II National Championships.  At "The Box", the Lady Buffs are 520-83 since 1980 for an incredible winning percentage of 86.2% and 90.6% during conference play.  
 
IN THE POLLS
MSU Denver remained first in the national standings at 25-1 overall with 31 of the 47 possible votes for 1,155 total points followed by Wayne State (15-fpv), Concordia-St. Paul, Minnesota Duluth, and Alaska Anchorage (1-fpv) to close the top five.  Three other schools from the South Central Region are represented in the poll with Regis sitting at 14th followed by Colorado Mesa in 17th and Colorado School of Mines in 22nd.  
 
MAKE IT A DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Four players have recorded double-doubles this season with Abi Nash, Torrey Miller, Ainsley Malis, and Blair Moreland totaling 16.  Torrey Miller leads the category with nine on the season which includes 147 kills and 118 digs. Malis is second with five followed by Nash and Moreland each with one. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Lady Buffs claimed the program's 20th Lone Star Conference Regular Season with a 4-1 victory over Texas A&M-Kingsville before sweeping past Texas A&M International to finish with a perfect 16-0 league schedule, marking the 17th unbeaten LSC schedule in program history. 
 
WT hit .234 hit on the weekend while the defense limited opponents to hit .160 including .045 against the TAMIU Dustdevils. Torrey Miller led the offense with 29 kills and 32.0 points to go along with 27 digs, four blocks and one service aces while Kayla Elliott had 20 kills and a team-high nine blocks. Bryli Contreras led the back row with 32 digs and Ainsley Malis guided the team with 45 assists. 
 
WT HEAD COACH KENDRA POTTS
Kendra Potts is in her fourth season at the helm of Lady Buff Volleyball with an overall 82-20 (.804) record and 53-10 (.841) in league play.  Potts led her alma mater to the program's 14th NCAA Elite Eight Appearance after capturing the South Central Regional title to become the sixth head coach in program history to guide WT to the Elite Eight. 
 
MAKING HISTORY
Following the LSC opening weekend, WT swept the LSC weekly awards for the first time since 2011 as Ainsley Malis was named the Setter of the Week while Torrey Miller and Taytum Stow earned Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors.  The trio became the first Lady Buffs to sweep the weekly honors since Nov. 2, 2011, with Ashley Davis, Erin Dougherty, and Lacy Hayes where WT finished 34-3 overall. WT is the only school to claim all three conference honors in a single week this season while claiming nine total this year. 
 
BRITKARE COURT
WT Athletics proudly announced a new state-of-the-art court for the historic home of Lady Buff Volleyball thanks to a generous gift from BritKare Home Medical that highlighted the 2021 season.   ­BritKare Court at The Box features a top-line Taraflex court surface that is widely used in Division I arenas, professional volleyball and was most recently featured at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.  Since BritKare Court's installment, the Lady Buffs have posted an incredible 25-1 record with a winning percentage of 96.2%.
