Hot-Shooting Lady Buffs Top #3 Fort Hays State in the Opener, 71-58

CANYON, Texas – The #6 Lady Buffs opened the season with a statement victory on Saturday afternoon as five different WT players scored in double-figures on the way to a 71-58 victory over #3 Fort Hays State during the D2CCA Tipoff Classic hosted by the MIAA at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Missouri.
 
Karley Motschenbacher led the way for the Lady Buffs as the sophomore guard finished the afternoon going 5-of-11 from the floor including 1-of-2 from deep and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line for a game-high 17 points to go along with seven rebounds, two assists, a block and three steals. Zamorye Roberts ended the game with 14 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists.
 
The Lady Buffs went 25-of-55 (45.5%) from the floor including 9-of-22 (40.9%) from deep and 12-of-13 (92.3%) from the free throw line to go along with 47 rebounds (six offensive, 41 defensive), 15 assists, 18 turnovers, eight blocks and three steals.
 
Fort Hays State was led by Katie Wagner as the sophomore went 4-of-20 from the floor including 8-of-10 at the free throw line for a team-high 16 points to go along with 12 rebounds and a steal for a double-double. The Tigers finished the afternoon going 17-of-76 (22.4%) from the floor including 4-of-22 (18.2%) from behind the arc and 20-of-23 (87%) from the free throw line to go along with 41 rebounds (17 offensive, 24 defensive), seven assists, seven turnovers, three blocks and six steals.
 
The Lady Buffs wrap up the D2CCA Tipoff Classic on Sunday morning as they take on the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers with tipoff set for 11:30 a.m. at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.
