CANYON, Texas – The No. 14 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M are back on the road this weekend when they set out to Wichita Falls to take on Midwestern State on Friday, Oct. 7, before taking on Texas Woman's on Saturday, Oct. 8. First serve is set for 6 p.m. against the Mustangs while Saturday's match is set for 4 p.m.
LIVE COVERAGE
A live stream and stats will be provided by the Midwestern State and Texas Woman's Communications departments. Both matches will be streamed on the Lone Star Conference Digital Network. Fans will be able to purchase a $10 daily pass that will give them access to all contests on the network that day as well as access to previously aired games from the current season for 24 hours.
Fans can also purchase a $50 volleyball season pass that will give them access to all Lone Star Conference volleyball matches. In addition to live and archived streaming options, viewers will have the option to purchase and download games from the 2022 season for $10 each.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
Midwestern State
Midwestern State is 3-14 on the season and 1-4 in conference play after defeating St. Edward's, 3-2, in the league opener. The Mustangs are led by first year head coach Stephanie Radecki who was hired as the 10
thhead coach in April 2022 after a four-year stint at Southern Miss. Prior to her time with SMU, she spent 14 seasons at the helm of the North Alabama volleyball program going 326-153.
The Lady Buffs lead the all-time series 40-1 including 14-1 in Wichita Falls. WT currently has a five-game win streak against the Mustangs with two of those coming under head coach
Kendra Potts.
As a team, the Mustangs are hitting .132 with 12.2 kills per frame led by Sadie Portmann. The freshman outside has totaled 176 kills (2.63/set) on 610 attempts to hit .085 while Autumn Roach has paced the offense with 369 assists (6.15/set) with a team-high 14 aces. On defense, Taygon Jones has 299 digs (5.07/set) on the season with Aaliyah Burras posting a team-high 32.0 blocks.
Texas Woman's
The Pioneers of Texas Woman's enter the weekend as the 12
th ranked team in the conference standings with a 2-4 league record and 11-7 overall after falling to Lubbock Christian 3-2, Wednesday night. TWU is led by sixth year head coach Jeff Heubner who has guided the program to three LSC tournament appearances.
WT leads the all-time series 49-8 with 16 of those victories taking place in Denton. Under coach Potts, the Lady Buffs are 1-1 including a shutout in Canyon last season.
Tori Woods and Kaia Saylor lead the Pioneers offense combining for 349 kills while Woods leads the program with 28 service aces. Lizzy Reed guides the team with 411 assists (6.85/set) and Woods while on defense Yanely Pabon has 303 digs (4.73/set) and Trixie Oche totals 56.0 blocks.
LAST TIME OUT
In their last outing, the Lady Buffs registered a pair of sweeps to remain undefeated in Lone Star Conference with a perfect 6-0 record. WT defeated Angelo State and UT Permian in straight sets, outscoring opponents 150-98.
Torrey Miller led with 22 kills while
Blair Moreland paced the offense with 38 assists and
Emma Patterson picked up 26 digs on the weekend. Head coach
Kendra Potts recorded her 70
th career victory against Angelo State as the Lady Buffs completed the season sweep over the Belles.
A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS
WT enters the week with the second highest attack percentage in the league percentage (.254) while leading the LSC in kills average (13.59) and ranking third in blocks per frame (2.36).
Three Lady Buffs rank in the top five in six categories with outside hitters
Torrey Miller and
Emma Becker and middle blocker
Taytum Stow.
Taytum Stow (.345) and
Emma Becker (.336) are 2-3 in hitting percentage while Stow is also second in blocks per set (1.28) and fifth in total blocks (68.0).
Torrey Miller is fourth in kills per frame (3.92), third in points per set, and fifth in total points (267.0).
In the national rankings, Stow ranks 10
th in blocks per set while Miller ranks in the top 30 in kills per set and points per set.
AROUND THE LONE STAR
WT and Texas A&M International sit atop the conference standings as the last two remaining undefeated programs with the Lady Buffs posting a perfect 6-0 record. DBU and Angelo State tie third at 5-1 followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville (3-1), UT Tyler (4-2), UT Permian Basin (4-2) and St. Mary's (4-2) rounding out the top eight schools. The top eight programs from the conference will advance to the league tournament on Nov. 10-12 hosted on the campus of the top seed.
IN THE POLLS
Wayne State remained atop the national rankings after receiving all possible 47 first-place votes. MSU Denver ranks second followed by Concordia-St. Paul, Tamp, and Nebraska-Kearney rounding out the top five. WT is the only school from the Lone Star Conference represented in the Top 25 while UT Tyler is receiving votes.
WT HEAD COACH KENDRA POTTS
Kendra Potts begins her fourth season as the helm of Lady Buff Volleyball with an overall 71-20 (.780) record and 43-10 (.811) in league play. Potts led her alma mater to the program's 14
th NCAA Elite Eight Appearance after capturing the South Central Regional title to become the sixth head coach in program history to guide WT to the Elite Eight.
MAKING HISTORY
Following the LSC opening weekend, WT swept the LSC weekly awards for the first time since 2011 as
Ainsley Malis was named the Setter of the Week while
Torrey Miller and
Taytum Stow earned Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors. The trio became the first Lady Buffs to sweep the weekly honors since Nov. 2, 2011, with Ashley Davis, Erin Dougherty, and Lacy Hayes where WT finished 34-3 overall.
HOME DOMINANCE
WT houses one of the best home environments in the country across all of NCAA volleyball. The WTAMU Fieldhouse, best known as "The Box" is home to 20 Lone Star Conference Championships, 14 regional titles and three NCAA Division II National Championships. At "The Box", the Lady Buffs are 515-83 since 1980 for an incredible winning percentage of 86.1% and 90.4% during conference play.
BRITKARE COURT
WT Athletics proudly announced a new state-of-the-art court for the historic home of Lady Buff Volleyball thanks to a generous gift from BritKare Home Medical that highlighted the 2021 season. BritKare Court at The Box features a top-line Taraflex court surface that is widely used in Division I arenas, professional volleyball and was most recently featured at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.
