No. 11 Lady Buffs Face Greyhounds for 600th Match at the Box

CANYON, Texas – The No. 11 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M (19-4, 11-0) will return to Canyon tomorrow, Oct. 22, when they welcome the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds (12-12, 3-9) for the 600th match held at the historic WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" with first serve set for 2 p.m. CT.  
 
A LADY BUFF GREAT
WT will honor the life of former Lady Buff great Brittany Bridge-Rodriguez during Saturday's match. Brittany Bridge-Rodriguez was a member of the 1997 NCAA Division II National Championship team as the only freshman on the team that year. To this day, she holds the Lone Star Conference single season record with 125 aces. "I Wear Blue for Brittany" t-shirts will be available at the match provided by the Lady Buff volleyball team. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Colon Cancer Coalition. 
 
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
Eastern New Mexico
Eastern New Mexico comes to Canyon with a 12-12 overall record and 3-9 in Lone Star Conference play. The Greyhounds are led by Sia Poyer who is in his ninth season at the helm of the program.  Under Poyer, the Greyhounds are 98-162. 
 
Saturday's match marks the 76th meeting between the two programs with WT leading the all-time series 70-15, including a 38-2 record in at home. The Lady Buffs are 3-0 under head coach Kendra Potts with two sweeps in the friendly confines of The Box.    
 
Mikaela Garvin is hitting .257 with 246 kills (3.04/set) on 575 attempts with 98 errors to lead the offense while Qitana Sapiga has guided the Greyhounds with 354 assists (3.89/set). Anjolina Perez ranks fourth in the LSC with a team-high 33 aces. Getsemani Carrasco leads the back row with 389 digs (4.27/set) with Gracelyn Stubbs holding a team-high 75.0 blocks. 
 
HOME DOMINANCE
WT houses one of the best home environments in the country across all of NCAA volleyball.  Built in 1951, the WTAMU Fieldhouse, best known as "The Box" is home to 20 Lone Star Conference Championships, 14 regional titles and three NCAA Division II National Championships.  At "The Box", the Lady Buffs are 516-83 since 1980 for an incredible winning percentage of 86.1% and 90.5% during conference play. 
 
SETTER OF THE WEEK
Blair Moreland, the Preseason Setter of the Year, became the fifth Lady Buff to receive a weekly honor after she was named the Lone Star Conference Setter of the Week.  The sophomore earned to award for the first time in her career after she helped pace the Lady Buffs to their 11th consecutive win. The Katy, Texas native totaled 69 assists last week including a career-high performance against UAFS on Friday night where the sophomore was credited 34 assists. She ranks 10th in the Lone Star Conference with 5.51 assists per set and is just three assists from reaching 1,000 career assists. 
 
AROUND THE LONE STAR 
WT leads the conference standings with a perfect 11-0 record followed by DBU (11-1), Texas A&M International (8-1), UT Tyler (8-3), St. Mary's (8-3), Angelo State (7-3), Texas A&M-Kingsville (6-3) and UT Permian Basin (6-4) rounding out the top eight. The top eight programs from the conference will advance to the league tournament on Nov. 10-12 hosted on the campus of the top seed. 
 
IN THE POLLS
Wayne State remains atop the national standings with an undefeated 23-0 record followed by MSU Denver (19-1), Concordia-St Paul (19-2), Minnesota Duluth (19-2), and Southwest Minnesota State (19-2) rounding out the top five. The Lady Buffs are the only Lone Star Conference member in the rankings.
 
The South Central Region remains heavily represented in the standings with MSU Denver leading in second followed by WT (11th), Regis (18th), Colorado Mesa (20th), Colorado School of Mines (22nd) while Colorado State-Pueblo and DBU are receiving votes. 
 
MAKE IT A DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Four players have recorded double-doubles this season with Abi Nash, Torrey Miller, Ainsley Malis, and Blair Moreland totaling 12.  Torrey Miller leads the category with seven on the season which includes 118 kills and 91 digs. Malis is second with three followed by Nash and Moreland each with one. 
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Lady Buffs extended their win streak out to 12 after sweeping Lubbock Christian on Wednesday night to move to 19-4 overall on the season.  WT hit over .300 for the seventh time this season at .320 with 44 kills on 100 attempts with 12 errors.  
 
Senior Abi Nash led the offense in the victory hitting .526 with 11 kills on 19 attempts with just one error. Blair Moreland and Ainsley Malis paced the Lady Buffs with 16 assists each. On defense, Bryli Contreras had 14 digs while Elliott led at the net with six blocks to go along with her two service aces. 
 
A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS
WT ranks second in the conference in attack percentage at .257 while leading the league in kills per set (13.79), assists per set (12.68) and blocks per set (2.46).  The Lady Buffs also limit opponents to hit just .136 which is the lowest in the league. 
 
The Lady Buffs are represented in the Top 10 of the LSC individual leaderboards of the with freshman Taytum Stow leading the league in blocks per frame (1.29).  Four Lady Buffs rank in the Top 20 in hitting percentage with Stow in third at .359 followed by Emma Becker (10th; .301), Kayla Elliott (11th; .298) and Torrey Miller (18th; .274).  Miller ranks second in total points (350), third in points average (4.49), fourth in total kills (298) and fourth in kills average (3.82). 
 
WT HEAD COACH KENDRA POTTS
Kendra Potts is in her fourth season at the helm of Lady Buff Volleyball with an overall 77-20 (.794) record and 48-10 (.828) in league play.  Potts led her alma mater to the program's 14th NCAA Elite Eight Appearance after capturing the South Central Regional title to become the sixth head coach in program history to guide WT to the Elite Eight. 
 
MAKING HISTORY
Following the LSC opening weekend, WT swept the LSC weekly awards for the first time since 2011 as Ainsley Malis was named the Setter of the Week while Torrey Miller and Taytum Stow earned Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors.  The trio became the first Lady Buffs to sweep the weekly honors since Nov. 2, 2011, with Ashley Davis, Erin Dougherty, and Lacy Hayes where WT finished 34-3 overall. 
 
BRITKARE COURT
WT Athletics proudly announced a new state-of-the-art court for the historic home of Lady Buff Volleyball thanks to a generous gift from BritKare Home Medical that highlighted the 2021 season.   ­BritKare Court at The Box features a top-line Taraflex court surface that is widely used in Division I arenas, professional volleyball and was most recently featured at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.  Since BritKare Court's installment, the Lady Buffs have posted an incredible 21-1 record with a winning percentage of 95.5%. 
 
LIVE COVERAGE
A live stream and stats will be provided by the WT Athletic Communications department for Saturday's match which will be streamed on the Lone Star Conference Digital Network.  Fans will be able to purchase a $10 daily pass that will give them access to all contests on the network that day as well as access to previously aired games from the current season for 24 hours. 
 
Fans can also purchase a $50 volleyball season pass that will give them access to all Lone Star Conference volleyball matches.  In addition to live and archived streaming options, viewers will have the option to purchase and download games from the 2022 season for $10 each.

The Lady Buffs will return to Canyon for the 600th match in The Box on Saturday, Oct. 22 when WT hosts Eastern New Mexico. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. against the Greyhounds.
