CANYON, Texas – The No. 11 West Texas A&M Lady Buffs (18-4, 10-0) will make a short trip down to Interstate 27 for midweek action when they go head-to-head with Lubbock Christian (9-14, 5-7 LSC) on Wednesday, Oct. 19. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at the Rip Griffin Center.
LIVE COVERAGE
A live stream and stats will be provided by the LCU Athletic Communications department for Wednesday's match which will be streamed on the Lone Star Conference Digital Network. Fans will be able to purchase a $10 daily pass that will give them access to all contests on the network that day as well as access to previously aired games from the current season for 24 hours.
Fans can also purchase a $50 volleyball season pass that will give them access to all Lone Star Conference volleyball matches. In addition to live and archived streaming options, viewers will have the option to purchase and download games from the 2022 season for $10 each.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
Lubbock Christian
LCU looks to end a two-game losing streak after falling to Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International last weekend, moving to 5-7 in league play and 9-14 overall which ranks 11
th in the conference standings. Head coach Keith Giboney is in his second season at the helm of LCU volleyball, leading the program to a 29-22 (.569) overall record.
The Lady Chaps and Lady Buffs meet for the second time this season for the 42
nd meeting. In their last matchup, WT won in three sets at the LSC Crossover in San Angelo to lead the all-time series 32-8-1 including 11-4 in Lubbock and 6-2 under head coach
Kendra Potts.
Lily Bickley is hitting .269 on the season with 195 kills (2.50/sets) on 490 attempts with 63 errors to lead the offense followed closely behind by Kiana Fallaha with 193 kills (2.38/sets). Kayton Genenbacher ranks second in the LSC with 844 assists (9.81/set) while Zoe Parker with 25 aces. Kendall Mahaney leads the back row with 379 digs (4.41/set) and Sage Chain has 88.0 blocks on the season which ranks second in the league.
SETTER OF THE WEEK
Blair Moreland, the Preseason Setter of the Year, was named the Lone Star Conference Setter of the Week for the first time in her career after she helped pace the Lady Buffs to their 11
th consecutive win after sweeping past Oklahoma Christian. The Katy, Texas native totaled 69 assists on the week including a career-high performance against UAFS on Friday night where the sophomore was credited 34 assists. She ranks 10th in the Lone Star Conference with 5.51 assists per set and is 19 assists from reaching 1,000 career assists.
AROUND THE LONE STAR
WT leads the conference standings with a perfect 10-0 record followed by DBU (9-1), Texas A&M International (7-1), St. Mary's (8-2), UT Tyler (7-3), Angelo State (7-3), UT Permian Basin (6-4) and UAFS (4-4) rounding out the top eight. The top eight programs from the conference will advance to the league tournament on Nov. 10-12 hosted on the campus of the top seed.
IN THE POLLS
Wayne State remains atop the national standings with an undefeated 23-0 record followed by MSU Denver (19-1), Concordia-St Paul (19-2), Minnesota Duluth (19-2), and Southwest Minnesota State (19-2) rounding out the top five. The Lady Buffs are the only Lone Star Conference member in the rankings.
The South Central Region remains heavily represented in the standings with MSU Denver leading in second followed by WT (11
th), Regis (18
th), Colorado Mesa (20
th), Colorado School of Mines (22
nd) while Colorado State-Pueblo and DBU are receiving votes.
MAKE IT A DOUBLE-DOUBLE
Four players have recorded double-doubles this season with
Abi Nash,
Torrey Miller,
Ainsley Malis, and
Blair Moreland totaling 12.
Torrey Miller leads the category with seven on the season which includes 118 kills and 91 digs. Malis is second with three followed by Nash and Moreland each with one.
LAST TIME OUT
The Lady Buffs extended their win streak out into double figures after defeating UAFS and Oklahoma Christian to move to remain undefeated in Lone Star Conference play at 10-0. WT hit .275 on the weekend with 11 kills on 279 attempts with 35 errors to go along with 110 assists, 134 digs, 18 blocks and nine aces.
Torrey Miller led the offense with 38 kills while
Blair Moreland paced the Lady Buffs with 55 assists. On defense, senior
Abi Nash collected 38 digs while
Taytum Stow had 10 blocks. Miller and
Ainsley Malis each had a double-double against the Lions combing for 19 kills, 19 assists, and 32 assists.
A LOOK AT THE NUMBERS
WT ranks second in the conference in attack percentage at .252 while leading the league in kills per set (13.76), assists per set (12.64) and blocks per set (2.40). The Lady Buffs also are second in hitting percentage (.255) and opponent hitting percentage (.139).
The Lady Buffs are represented in the Top 10 in individual cateogries of the conference leaderboard ranking with freshman
Taytum Stow leading the league in blocks per frame (1.27). Four Lady Buffs rank in the Top 20 in hitting percentage with Stow in second at .360 followed by
Kayla Elliott in ninth (.301),
Emma Becker in 10
th(.299) and
Torrey Miller in 16
th (.273). Miller ranks second in total points, third in points average (4.57) and fourth in total kills (293) and kills average (3.91).
WT HEAD COACH KENDRA POTTS
Kendra Potts is in her fourth season at the helm of Lady Buff Volleyball with an overall 76-20 (.792) record and 47-10 (.825) in league play. Potts led her alma mater to the program's 14
th NCAA Elite Eight Appearance after capturing the South Central Regional title to become the sixth head coach in program history to guide WT to the Elite Eight.
MAKING HISTORY
Following the LSC opening weekend, WT swept the LSC weekly awards for the first time since 2011 as
Ainsley Malis was named the Setter of the Week while
Torrey Miller and
Taytum Stow earned Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors. The trio became the first Lady Buffs to sweep the weekly honors since Nov. 2, 2011, with Ashley Davis, Erin Dougherty, and Lacy Hayes where WT finished 34-3 overall.
HOME DOMINANCE
WT houses one of the best home environments in the country across all of NCAA volleyball. The WTAMU Fieldhouse, best known as "The Box" is home to 20 Lone Star Conference Championships, 14 regional titles and three NCAA Division II National Championships. At "The Box", the Lady Buffs are 516-83 since 1980 for an incredible winning percentage of 86.6% and 90.4% during conference play.
BRITKARE COURT
WT Athletics proudly announced a new state-of-the-art court for the historic home of Lady Buff Volleyball thanks to a generous gift from BritKare Home Medical that highlighted the 2021 season. BritKare Court at The Box features a top-line Taraflex court surface that is widely used in Division I arenas, professional volleyball and was most recently featured at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Since BritKare Court's installment, the Lady Buffs have posted an incredible 21-1 record with a winning percentage of 95.5%.
UP NEXT
The Lady Buffs will return to Canyon for the 600
th match in The Box on Saturday, Oct. 22 when WT hosts Eastern New Mexico. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. against the Greyhounds.
WT will also honor the life of Brittany Bridge-Rodriguez with "I Wear Blue for Brittany" t-shirts provided by the Lady Buff volleyball team. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Colon Cancer Coalition.
