No. 17 Lady Buffs Down Mustangs on Saturday Night

CANYON, Texas – The West Texas A&M women's soccer team used a pair of second half goals to take down the Midwestern State Mustangs, 2-0. The Lady Buffs moved to 11-1-2, 5-1-2 in Lone Star Conference play while the Mustangs fall to 5-7-1 overall and 2-5-1 in the LSC.

WT came out of the opening kickoff by attacking the Midwestern State back line, putting up shots in the first minutes of play. After holding the Lady Buffs off the scoreboard, the Mustangs took their turn to attack. WT goalkeeper Reagan Heelan made a pair of crucial saves within 20 seconds of each other with 27 minutes before halftime. Heelan came up big for the Lady Buffs throughout the remainder of the first half, accounting for four more stops in net. Despite chances by both sides, the game went scoreless into the half.

After the intermission, WT regained its offensive footing. Three minutes into the second half, Maria-Frances Serrant sent a shot towards goal but came up empty. A minute and a half later, Serrant's next opportunity got blocked by the Mustangs' defense, but Nicole Gray controlled the loose ball. Gray made space for herself inside the box, slicing a shot past Midwestern State goalkeeper Lexi Jackson. The Mustangs started to stifle the Lady Buffs until midway through the period. In the 65th minute, Kyndahl Britton attacked from her defensive spot, dribbling from midfield to the 18-yard box. After slipping past a defender, the sophomore rifled a shot into the back corner of the net for her first collegiate goal. Content with the two-goal advantage, the Lady Buffs held off the Mustangs for the 2-0 victory.

Heelan matched her season-high with seven saves in the win while registering her ninth shutout of the season. The sophomore goalkeeper sits tied atop the conference leader board in shutouts, lowering her goals-against average to 0.36 on the season.

WT hits the road to face rival Eastern New Mexico in Portales. Wednesday's match between the Lady Buffs and Greyhounds starts at 5 p.m. Central.
