PORTALES, N.M. – The West Texas A&M women's soccer team used an offensive onslaught to defeat the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds, 4-1. The Lady Buffs moved their record to 12-1-2 overall and 6-1-2 in the Lone Star Conference.
The Lady Buffs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as
Emily Avila scored on a free kick nearly 40 yards away from the goal. Avila's goal was set up by the WT attack after
Maria-Frances Serrant drew a foul. The Lady Buffs found the score sheet once again in the 19th minute when
Maliyah Mendoza sent a crossing pass into the box. Once the ball arrived, Serrant sent a shot towards the goal that Eastern New Mexico goalkeeper Samantha Jeffries looked to have saved but the ball crossed the goal line before Jeffries got a handle. The Lady Buffs increased their advantage 14 minutes later when Serrant timed a run perfectly to get ahead of
Asha James' leading pass. With only the goalkeeper to beat, Serrant slipped it past Jefferies to give WT a 3-0 lead before halftime.
After the second half kickoff, Avila sent a ball downfield for Serrant. Serrant gathered and chipped a shot over Jeffries to push the advantage to 4-0 less than 20 seconds into the second period. The sophomore forward collected her second hat trick of her career after recording her first against Fort Lewis on Sept. 2. Eastern New Mexico got on the board in the 54
th minute after Samantha Vasquez snuck a shot under the crossbar and into the back of the net. The Lady Buffs held on to the three-goal lead and took the conference contest.
WT held a 20-4 lead in shots including a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Lady Buffs' four goals are the most given up by the Greyhounds this season.
WT returns to The Pitch for a match with St. Mary's on Saturday. First kick is scheduled for 1 p.m.
