Oklahoma City, Okla. – West Texas A&M freshman
Madison Johnson hit her first career grand slam in a five-run 1
stinning for No. 12 West Texas A&M as they defeated No. 20 Angelo State 10-0 in five innings on Saturday afternoon to win their fifth Lone Star Conference Tournament title. The Lady Buffs earn the LSC's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II softball tournament after defeating a pair of Top 25 teams en route to their first conference crown since 2017.
Â
Johnson was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player and was joined by teammates
Ruby Salzman,
Alyx Cordell,
Shanna McBroom and
Kyra Lair on the all-tournament team. Â
Â
WT got off to a perfect start with Johnson connecting on the Lady Buffs third grand slam of the season in the top of the first inning. McBroom had a bunt single to leadoff the game with Salzman reaching base on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and second with no outs. Following a pop up the catcher for the first out of the inning, McBroom stole third and scored on a throwing error form the catcher. Following back-to-back walks from Cordell and
Gabriella Valforte, Johnson got just enough of the 2-1 pitch from ASU's Makayla Cobrin to clear the bases and make it 5-0.Â
Â
Cordell added to the lead in the top of the third with her second home run of the tournament, a solo shot to right field to make it 6-0.
Emilee Wilson came out the bullpen in the bottom half of the inning and had to work herself out a jam after loading the bases. The redshirt sophomore got Keilei Garcia to ground out to Cordell and keep the Rambelles off the scoresheet.Â
Â
WT added to their lead in the top of the fourth inning with the bottom half of the order doing most of the damage.
Sydney Greeson reached on an error followed by a single up the middle from
Julie Guzman.
Hailey Neira's sac bunt advanced both runners with McBroom clearing the bases with a single to the right side of the infield. Salzman then drove in McBroom with her 16
th double of the season. Valforte put the Lady Buffs into double figures for the third time in three games against the Rambelles with a single through the left side.
Â
Wilson got Courtney Barnhill to pop up for the final out of the game as the redshirt sophomore improved to 13-5 on the season after allowing two hits in three innings of relief.
Kyra Lair started the game and went two innings allowing one hit with two strikeouts.
