OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Ruby Salzman went 3-for-4 driving in two runs as No. 12 West Texas A&M defeated No. 4 Oklahoma Christian 5-1 on Friday evening in the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Championships at Tom Heath Field in Oklahoma City, Okla.
The Lady Buffs will go for their fifth LSC Tournament title on Saturday, May 15, against No. 20 Angelo State. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
Madison Johnson's seventh home run of the season gave the Lady Buffs a 1-0 run in the top of the second. The freshman sent a pitch up in the zone just inside the foul pole for her first home run of the tournament.
The Eagles tied the game at 1-all in the bottom of the third on a two-out double from Katelyn Dunckel a batter after
Hailey Neira made a diving catch in foul territory.
Johnson drove in her second run of the game in the top of the sixth with a two-out single to give the Lady Buffs a 2-1 lead. Cordell got everything started with a double to center field with Valforte putting runners on first and second after getting hit by a pitch. They advanced a base after a wild pitch before Johnson singled to left to plate Cordell and give WT their second lead of the night.
Kyra Lair stranded two Eagles in the bottom half of the inning.
The Lady Buffs extended their lead in the top of the seventh run with three runs on two hits. Neira and McBroom walked to open the inning before Salzman sent a ball over the head of the centerfield to plate two runs. Salzman came around to score two batters later on
Gabriella Valforte's single through the right side.
OC tried to rally as they loaded the bases with two outs but Lair got Kylie Janzen to fly out to
Erica Vessels to end the game.
Wilson was credited with the victory after scattering four hits for one run over five innings. Lair picked up her second save of the season after going two innings in relief.
