Strong Second Half Pushes Lady Buffs Past Texas A&M-Commerce

CANYON, Texas – Noir Hawash scored twice in the second half as West Texas A&M defeated Texas A&M-Commerce 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Championships on Tuesday evening in Canyon. The Lady Buffs improved to 6-3-0 overall with their sixth straight win over the Lions.

Reegan Heelan was called on to make her first save of the game in the second minute before the Lady Buffs started to find space in the midfield resulting in shots from Asha James and Cheyenne Orozco

The Lady Buffs controlled possession for a majority of the opening 30 minutes but it was the Lions who nearly opened the scoring in the 33rd minute. Leslie Campuzano found some space and unleashed a shot that was pushed off the cross bar from Heelan. The freshman jumped to her feet and forced Cora Welch's rebound to go wide.

WT would have a flurry of shots just before halftime but A&M-Commerce's Jane Peters denied the Lady Buffs four times to send the match into halftime tied at zero.

Emily Avila broke the deadlock in the 48th minute with a laser of a free kick from 25 yards out for her first goal of the season. Hannah Kelley-Lusk doubled the advantage in the 54th minute on a nice passing sequence from Hawash and Calista Cordero. Hawash's through ball found the right foot of Cordrero, who took one touch and found Kelley-Lusk at the far post for eighth of the season.

Hawash made it 3-0 in the 59th minute on her first strike of the season after getting on the end of Jessica Diaz's pass over the Lion defense. She made no mistake as she possessed the ball well with her first touch before sending the ball into the back of the net.

The senior from Albuquerque, N.M. got a second just four minutes later with Diaz picking up another assist. She timed her run perfectly before beating Peters at the far post to put the game out of reach.

Asha James, Kelley-Lusk and Hawash all registered a game high five shots as the Lady Buffs outshot the Lions 30-13. Heelan made two saves before being substituted in the 73rd for Daniela Estrada.

The Lady Buffs will face No. 1 DBU on Saturday, April 10, in Dallas.
