Cordero’s Golden Goal Lifts Lady Buffs over Texas A&M-Commerce

COMMERCE, Texas – Calista Cordero and Maliyah Mendoza scored twice as West Texas A&M pushed their win streak to four games with a 4-3 overtime victory over Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday afternoon. The Lady Buffs improve to 4-2-0 overall and 4-1-0 in Lone Star Conference play.

The Lady Buffs outshot the Lions 23-13 including 10 shots on-target. Cordero had a game-high six shots while Reagan Heelan had three saves in her third win of the season.

WT had a chance to open the scoring in the 18th minute after they were awarded a penalty. Reagan Matacale stepped up to the spot but was unable to find the back of the net. The visitors continued to find space in the Lion half of the pitch as Cordero, Jessica Diaz and Hannah Kelley-Lusk had shots on-target that were saved by A&M-Commerce's Jen Peters.

The Lady Buffs would open the scoring the 22nd minute on Mendoza's first goal of the season with Asha James picking up the assist. A&M-Commerce equalized three minutes later on Skylar Sorrell's goal.

Heelan was forced to make a save in the 28th minute before WT retook the lead on Mendoza's second goal of the day. Jessica Diaz was credited with assist as Mendoza finished off her second career brace.

It was 2-all in the opening minutes of the second half as Melissa Storey scored for the Lions in the 47th minute on Leslie Campuzano's second assist of the day.

Cordero found the back of the net for the second time of the season in the 65th minute as the Lady Buffs retook the lead. The Lions once again responded in the 72nd minute as Lauren Shaw made the visitors pay with a long shot over the outstretched arms of Heelan.

Heelan came up big in the final minutes to send the match into overtime as she saved Cora Welch's shot to the right corner in the 88th minute.

Kelley-Lusk had the Lady Buffs first chance in the overtime period but her left footed shot went into the side netting in the 96th minute. She would turn provider a minute later as her cross bounced off the hands of the keeper and right onto the foot of Cordero for the game-winner.
