#11 Buffs Take the Opener from UT Permian Basin, 13-6

CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M ran their win streak to three games on Friday night as they topped the UT Permian Basin Falcons in Lone Star Conference action at Wilder Park, 13-6. Game two is scheduled for Saturday with first pitch at 5 p.m. in Canyon.
 
The Falcons got on the board in the first as they plated three runs on five hits for the early 3-0 lead. WT responded in the home half as Reese Patterson singled up the middle with two outs to score Cade Engle and Jonah Gonzales to cut the lead to 3-2.
 
UTPB took advantage of a Buffalo error in the second to add to their lead with one out before Mathieu Gauthier settled in to strand a runner on third at 4-2.
 
WT loaded the bases with no outs in the third as Will Fuenning would score from third on a passed ball followed later in the inning by a two-run single from Izaiah Madrid and a Kason Haggard RBI single at 6-4. Keone Givens drew an RBI walk as the Falcons made a call to the pen with the Buffs leading 7-4.
 
Madrid drove in his third RBI of the night in the fourth as the junior singled thru the left side to score Kennedy Badgett followed by a Patterson RBI triple in the fifth to score Fuenning while Patterson would score on a heads up play to make it 10-4.
 
UTPB used the long ball to cut into the lead as Nick Hernandez lifted a solo shot to left center. The Buffs responded in the home half as Badgett doubled to the gap in left center to score Patterson and run the lead to 11-6. 
 
WT added to their lead in the eighth on a Kyle Moos pinch-hit RBI single followed later in the inning by a wild pitch to score Cade Engle at 13-6. 
 
Gauthier picked up the win (3-1) on the mound for the Buffs, allowing five runs (four earned) on 10 hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Chandler Dean allowed one earned run on five hits with one walk and five K's in his four frames to earn a save.
