MEET NOTES

CANYON, Texas –
West Texas A&M opens the 2021 indoor season on Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Corky Classic hosted by Texas Tech at the Sports Performance Center. The first event begins at 11 a.m. and will air on ESPN+.

CORKY CLASSIC PREVIEW
Leah Belfield, the 2020 Lone Star Conference Track Athlete of the Year, is entered in the 60 and 200-meters to open her sophomore campaign. She won the 60m dash in a personal best time of 7.56 while finishing second in the 200m.

Florance Uwajeneza and Eleonora Curtabbi will make their track debuts for WT in the mile and 3,000-meters. The trio of Flore Gracia, Miriam Zanovello and Taylor Nelloms will compete in the triple jump. Zada Swoopes will go up against some top Divsion I talent in the shot put.

Benjamin Azamati and Desmond Aryee will open the season in the 60m dash with Malick Dop scheduled to compete in the 200 and 400-meters. The 800-meters has the potential to be one of the top events at the meet with Arnaud Taki and Butare Rugenerwa scheduled to toe the line. They also have a large contigent in the 3,000-meters led by Innocent Murwanashyaka and Ezekiel Kipchirchir.

Guillaume Devries returns to Lubbock for the first time since winning the LSC high jump title. Ray Dixon, Seth Jackson, Rhet Pennington and Mahmoud Massoud will all compete in the shot put.

WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN
Saturday will be the first meet for the Buffs and Lady Buffs since the 2019 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships were canceled due to COIVD-19 on March 12. Both teams were in Birmingham, Ala. in preparation for the championships before all winter and spring sports were canceled due to the pandemic.

READY TO BUILD OFF A STRONG CROSS COUNTRY SEASON
WT cross country had another impressive fall including the Buffs winning their eighth straight team title. Murwanashyaka was the top runner for the Buffs at the championship with his runner-up finish with Rugenerwa and Taki finishing third and fourth.

Uwajeneza had arguably the greatest season of any Lady Buff in program history as the junior won the LSC and DII National Invite titles. She won the conference meet by one minute and 24 seconds, the largest margin in LSC history.

UP NEXT
WT will compete at the Washburn Open in Topeka, Kan. on Jan. 29-30 at the Ichabod's brand-new indoor athletic facility.
