TUCSON, Ariz. – The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs came up short on Sunday afternoon as they dropped the final two games of the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Ariz., falling to Southern Nazarene, 2-1, and Simon Fraser, 5-4.

The Lady Buffs fell behind in the first as Southern Nazarene tallied a run with an RBI single up the middle to jump on the board before a sacrifice fly ball to center field double their lead.

WT would bring the score within one in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back singles by
Sydney Greeson and
Alyx Cordell to lead off for the Lady Buffs.Â
Steph Elliott laid down a sacrifice bunt to move runners into scoring position before
Brittany Cruz lifted a sac fly into left field to bring in a run.Â

Unable to land another runner on base the Lady Buffs would ultimately fall short as SNU claimed the victory.

Kyra Lair (7-3) recorded the loss allowing two runs (two earned) on six hits with no walks. The Canyon native tied her season-high with seven strikeouts.

WT jumped out to an early 1-0 lead as a groundout to the shortstop would score Julia Guzman from third. The Lady Buffs extended their lead in the second when back-to-back doubles by
Cinthia Garcia and
Shanna McBroom would make it 3-1.Â

Simon Fraser responded in the fourth was Alex Ogg tripled into right center to clear the bases followed by a single into right gave SFU the go ahead 5-3 lead. A single up the middle by
Shyanne Sanchez would score
Sydney Greeson for the Lady Buffs to bring the score within one.

The Lady Buffs would fight to the end as
Alyx Cordell took a full count pitch up the middle to get a runner on for WT. A popup to the second baseman would end the threat.

Kyra Lair (7-4) picked up the loss allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts.Â
Emilee Wilson made an appearance on the mound allowing no runs with one walk and one strikeout in 2 2/3 innings.

The Lady Buffs will head to Lubbock for the final preseason tournament at the LCU Invitational hosted by Lubbock Christian, on Feb. 22-23, where they will take on Tarleton, UT Permian Basin, Lubbock Christian and Eastern New Mexico.
