#15 Buffs Host #11 Angelo State in an LSC Weekend Series at Wilder Park

CANYON, Texas – 
The #15 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M return to Lone Star Conference action this weekend as they host the #11 Rams of Angelo State in a four-game series on Military Weekend at Wilder Park starting on Friday night with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in Canyon.
 
ANGELO STATE
The Rams are guided by 15th year head coach Kevin Brooks who holds an overall record of 549-291 (65.3%) during his time in San Angelo with three trips to the NCAA Division II College World Series (2007, 2015, 2016).
 
ASU sits atop of the Lone Star Conference standings after the opening weekend of league action as they swept past UT Permian Basin at Foster Field to run their win streak to five games for an overall record of 23-5.
 
ASU is led offensively by Josh Elvir who is hitting .436 on the season with five doubles, three triples and 10 homeruns to drive in 34 RBI with 75 total bases for a slugging percentage of .962 to go along with five stolen bases. On the mound, Trent Baker (5-1) has started eight games, he has registered a 3.10 ERA in his 40.2 innings of work with 16 runs allowed (14 earned) on 40 hits with 14 walks and 34 strikeouts for an opposing batting average of .256
 
NATIONAL COLLEGE BASEBALL WRITERS TOP-25 POLL (MAR. 26)
The West Texas A&M Buffaloes dropped to 15th in this week's edition of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Top-25 Poll announced on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Colorado Mesa picked up eight of the possible 19 first place votes for a total of 455 points to sit atop of the poll followed by Tampa (seven first place, 454), UC San Diego (one first place, 441), St. Cloud State (two first place, 418), North Greenville (one first place, 402), Quincy (368), Southern New Hampshire (337), Catawba (324), Mercyhurst (307) and West Florida (307) to round out the top ten. The South Central Region was represented by Colorado Mesa (1st), Angelo State (11th), West Texas A&M (15th), Dixie State (25th) and Lubbock Christian (RV).
 
WT HEAD COACH MATT VANDERBURG
Matt Vanderburg has built West Texas A&M Baseball into a regional and national contender as the Norman, Oklahoma native enters his 11th season at the helm of the Buffs. He holds an overall record of 339-211 (.616) during his decade in Canyon while registering a career record of 438-278 (.612) in his 13 seasons in collegiate baseball.
 
COLLEGE BASEBALL NEWSPAPER PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN
West Texas A&M senior right-hander Joe Corbett has been named a Division II Preseason All-American by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The Buffs were ranked 18th in the country by the publication in their annual Preseason Poll.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE PRESEASON POLL
West Texas A&M senior Joe Corbett was named the Lone Star Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year while the Buffs were picked atop of the annual LSC Baseball Preseason Poll.
 
The defending LSC Champions picked up 10 of the possible 18 first place votes for a total of 117 points followed by Texas A&M-Kingsville (six first place, 106), Angelo State (two first place, 94), Tarleton (76), Eastern New Mexico (51), Cameron (34) and UT Permian Basin (26). Corbett joins Brooks Trujillo (2016) as the only Buffs to be named the league's Preseason Pitcher of the Year.
