DENVER, Colo. – Four different Lady Buffs homered as No. 9 West Texas A&M took both games of Tuesday's doubleheader against MSU Denver at Regency Athletic Complex in Denver, Colo. Erica Vessels hit her first two career home runs in a WT uniform along with Brittany Cruz, Alyx Cordell and Kourtney Coveney going deep to help WT improve to 4-0 against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference this season.
Tomorrow's doubleheader against Colorado Christian was cancelled due to projected snow fall in the area so the Lady Buffs will turn their attention to their three-game series against nationally-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce at Schaeffer Park on March 15-16.Â
THE BASICS

The Lady Buffs scored in the first inning for the fourth straight game on a RBI single to left field by Miranda Grotenhuiss after Coveney had reached base on an error followed by a Kylee Moore single up the middle. The Roadrunners tied that game at 1-all in the bottom of the third inning on Darby McGhee's double down the left field line to score Ashlee Kim.
After a scoreless fourth inning, WT's bats got hot in the top of the fifth as they scored six runs on four hits including a three-run home run from Cordell. Coveney got things started with a single to center followed by a double to right center by Ruby Salzman that would score both runners following an error from MSU Denver's second basemen. The bases would be loaded for Vessels as the junior hit the ball deep enough to score Moore to make it 4-1. Cordell was up next and sent one over the fence in left field for her second home run of the season.
Shayne Starkey would set the Roadrunners down in order in the bottom half of the inning before WT added four more runs in the top of the sixth inning. Coveney led the inning off with her seventh home run of the season forcing a pitching change. Salzman singled to though the gap in the left side with Moore walking on four pitches to put runners on first and second with no outs. They both advanced a base on Grotenhuis' ground out to second while a Shanna McBroom single to right to plate both runners and make it 10-1 in favor of WT.
Starkey (8-2) was credited with the win after going five innings allowing one run (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts. Miranda Martinez saw her first action in the circle this season retiring all three batters she faced.

WT's momentum from the first game transferred over the second game as they put up six runs in the first inning including Vessels first career home run in Maroon & White. Salzman was credited with a leadoff single as the freshman scored on an error by the centerfielder. Grotenhuis walked on four pitches with Moore doubling to left to put runners on second and third with one out. The junior would come around to score on a wild pitch with Starkey doubling down the right field line to score Moore. Amelya Huggins joined the RBI party with a single to right center followed by Vessels home run to deep center to make it 6-0.
A BCruz sac fly to center field would make it 7-0 in the top of the second for the Lady Buffs. Kyra Lair sat the Roadrunners down in order for the second consecutive inning thanks to Huggins throwing out Kassy Reiger at second. WT would continue to add to their lead in the top of third with six more runs, three of those coming on Cruz's third home run of the season. With two outs, Salzman doubled to right center before coming around to score on a single by Coveney. Brittney Gonzalez and Moore followed that with walks to load the bases before Starkey connected on a two RBI double to right. Cruz was up next and lifted one high and deep over the fence in left to make it 13-0 in favor of the visitors.Â
MSU Denver would get on the board in the bottom of the third inning on a RBI single by McGhee after loading the bases with one out. Vessels opened the top of the fourth inning up with her second home run of the game on a 1-1 pitch from Destinee Lopez. The Roadrunners would add two more runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run home run from Laney Sheppard. Â
Lair (11-0) remained perfect in the circle for WT going four innings allowing three runs (three earned) on four hits with two walks and one strikeout. Martinez made her second appearance of the day allowing two hits in the bottom of the fifth.Â
