Cordell’s Career Game Lifts Lady Buffs over Lubbock Christian

LUBBOCK, Texas – Alyx Cordell recorded a career-high four hits as West Texas A&M rallied past Lubbock Christian, 11-10, on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference showdown at Plainscapital Park. After trailing by as six runs, WT scored the final six runs to run their win streak to nine games.

After leaving the bases loaded in the top of the first inning, LCU took a 4-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning on three hits including a two RBI double to right center from K'Leigh Arredondo. The Lady Buffs would get on the board in the top of the second inning with both runs coming with two outs. Cordell got things started with a single right field with Ruby Salzman reaching on throwing error. Shayne Starkey walked to load the bases before Amelya Huggins ripped a single up the middle to cut the deficit to 4-2.

LCU would add to their lead in the bottom of the second inning with a RBI single from Lindzi Clemmer followed by a three-run home run from KK Lopez-Liu to make it 8-2. WT continued to battle back with two more runs in the top of the third inning. Brittany Cruz led off with a double to left center advancing to third on a single to right field from Shanna McBroom. Erica Vessels' groundout to second base plated Cruz with McBroom moving over to third following a wild pitch. Cordell picked up the first RBI of the game with a single up the middle to make it 8-4.

McBroom drove in another run for the Lady Buffs in the top of the fourth but the Lady Chaps responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning to make it 10-5 after four complete. WT would score six unanswered runs over the next two innings to take the lead. India Holland picked up a perfect time for her first career home run in the top of the fifth inning with a two-run shot to make it 10-7. 

In the top of the sixth inning, Vessels reached base with a leadoff single before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Cordell continued to torment the Lady Chaps with another single RBI to left followed by a double from Salzman to force a pitching change. The new pitcher didn't' fair much better as Starkey took the 2-2 offering up the middle of the field to plate the eventual game-winning run. 

Starkey shut the Lady Chaps down over the final two innings to help the Lady Buffs pick up their first win over LCU on the road since 2016. With two runners on with no outs in the bottom of the sixth before the senior forced a double play to get out of the threat. 

Kyra Lair got the start going 2 innings allowing eight runs (four earned) with six hits and a walk while Starkey (5-1) pitched the final 5 innings in relief holding the Lady Chaps to two runs (two earned) on four hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
