SAN ANGELO Texas – West Texas A&M defeated No. 1 Angelo State twice on Saturday at Mayer Field to secure their first-ever three-game sweep of the Rambelles in San Angelo. Alyx Cordell and Brittany Cruz drove in two runs apiece in their game two victory while Shayne Starkey's three-run home run led WT to a 9-6 victory in the series finale.
The Lady Buffs return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 26, against Lubbock Christian at Plainscapital Park in Lubbock, Texas. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.

The Lady Buffs loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the first inning after Kourtney Coveney extended her hit streak to four games with a single before Kylee Moore and Miranda Grotenhuis walked in consecutive at-bats. Ruby Salzman popped up to short to end the threat. The Rambelles loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning with one out after Avery Zeigler singled up the middle followed by a walk to Jade Strother and Hatty Shope was hit by a pitch. Starkey settled down to get two consecutive outs to keep the game scoreless.Â
Cordell would open the scoring for WT in the top of the fourth inning with a two-RBI single up the middle. Grotenhuis, Salzman and Erica Vessels all walked to load the bases for the junior who put one out of the reach of the ASU infielders to make it 2-0. The Rambelles once again threatened in the bottom of the fifth inning loading the bases but Starkey forced a pair of groundouts to keep her shutout intact.Â
WT blew the game wide open in the top of the sixth inning with five runs, two of those coming on a Brittany Cruz home run. Salzman lead the inning with a single to left field followed by Cruz' second home run of the season. The bases would be loaded three batters later as Vessels and Starkey walked while Cordell picked up her second single of the game. Following the first out of the inning, Amelya Huggins walked to score Vessels followed by a RBI groundout to the pitcher from Moore that brought Cordell around to score. Following another walk to Grotenhuis, Salzman would finish the scoring with a RBI single to left field. ASU would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a Taegan Kirk RBI single to make it 7-1.
Starkey (4-1) allowed one run (one earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and three walks in her second complete game of the season.Â

The Lady Buffs opened the scoring for the third consecutive game with four runs in the top of the second inning. Following Cruz's leadoff double down the left field line, the junior came around to score on a throwing error which put Shanna McBroom at second. Salzman singled to left to advance McBroom over to third following the first two outs of the inning before Starkey homered for the second time this season with a shot over the fence in center to make it 4-0.
The visitors would add to their lead in the top of the fourth inning on a pair of RBIs from Moore and Grotenhuis. WT loaded the bases with no outs before Moore singled through the left side to plate Cordell and force a Rambelle pitching change. Grotenhuis would make it 6-0 with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Salzman. ASU would get on the board in the bottom half of the inning on Strother's double to left center while Ashlyn Lerma was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Courtney Barnhill had a chance to tie it up with the bases loaded but Kyra Lair got her to strikeout out to end the inning.Â
WT added three more runs in the top of the fifth inning to make it 9-2. Cruz opened the inning with a walk before advancing to second on a bunt single by McBroom. Vessels was the next Lady Buff up and would single up the middle for her first RBI of the game. Following a wild pitch that put runners on runners on second and third with one out, Salzman unleashed a double to left center to clear the bases.Â
ASU would make it interesting with four runs on one hit and one error in the bottom of the sixth inning but Lair (7-0) sat the Rambelles down in order in the bottom of the seventh to seal the sweep allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits with five walks and two strikeouts in her second complete game of the weekend.Â
