#10 West Texas A&M Splits a Saturday Doubleheader with Regis

CANYON, Texas – The #10 Buffs of West Texas A&M suffered their first loss of the season before responding with a nightcap win to split a Saturday doubleheader with the Regis Rangers on a cold and windy night at Wilder Park in Canyon.
 
The Buffs and Rangers will conclude their weekend series on Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. at Wilder Park.

HOW IT HAPPENENED (GAME 1):
The Buffs got on the board in the home half of the first inning as they loaded the bases with two outs before Jake Pederson drew a walk to score Christian Loya for the 1-0 lead. Regis used a pair of base hits in the top of the third to put runners on the corners with no outs, Drew Mesecher fielded his position as RU tried to lay down the squeeze bunt but the senior got an out at home, Regis plated a run on a Ben Kittay singled to center but WT got a pair of outs at the plate to limit the damage to just one run.
 
WT responded in the home half of the fourth with a Justice Nakagawa RBI single thru the right side to score Nick Guaragna and get to the Regis bullpen and make it 2-1. Regis jumped on top in the top of the fifth as Connor Rochon lifted a three-run homerun to right center with two outs for the 4-2 lead. Regis added insurance runs in the top of the sixth with a Coby Zimmerman bases-clearing double with one out for the 7-2 win.
 
Mesecher picked up the loss (1-1) for the Buffs, giving up four runs on eight hits with no walks and six strikeouts in his five innings of work.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
The Buffs started off the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Jaxxon Fagg singled to left field with the bases loaded and two outs to drive in a pair for the early 2-0 lead. WT added to their lead in the home half of the second as Clay Koelzer singled to second base with two outs to score Guaragna followed by a Kyle Kaufman RBI single down the right field line, Fagg singled thru the right side to drive in a pair to make it 6-0.
 
Regis wouldn't go down without a fight as they plated a run in the top of the fifth and two in the seventh with a pair of outs before WT's Dominic Yearego entered and picked up his third save of the season with a strikeout to end the game. Darin Cook was great on the mound again for the Buffs as the senior allowed no runs on one hit with three walks and seven strikeouts in his four innings of work while Cooper Harris tossed a pair of strong frames, allowing four runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
