WT Volleyball Hosts the BritKare Lady Buff Classic to Open the 2018 Campaign

CANYON, Texas –
 The Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M open up their 2018 campaign on Friday and Saturday at the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" in Canyon as they host the annual BritKare Lady Buff Classic with scheduled matchups against Adams State, #10 Rockhurst, Emporia State and Lubbock Christian. Eastern New Mexico will also take park in the event.
 
ADAMS STATE
The Grizzlies were tabbed eighth in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) preseason coaches poll following a 2017 campaign that saw Adams State go 14-14 overall with a 10-8 mark in league action as they advanced to the RMAC Tournament Semifinals.
 
ASU is guided by 12th year head coach Lindy Mortensen who enters the 2018 campaign with an overall career record of 183-180 (.504).
 
#10 ROCKHURST
The Hawks enter the 2018 season second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVA) preseason poll following a 32-8 overall record in 2017 including a 14-4 mark in league play as RU made a run to the Midwest Regional Title and the National Semifinals before falling to eventual National Champion Concordia St. Paul in straight sets.
 
Rockhurst is guided by Tracy Rietzke who is now in his 31st season with the Hawks. He has led RU to 24 NCAA Appearances while ranking atop of Division II active head coaches with 1,212 victories.
 
EMPORIA STATE
The Hornets were tabbed eighth in the Mid-American Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) preseason coaches poll following a 15-17 overall campaign last season including a 7-11 mark in league action to advance to the MIAA Tournament Quarterfinals.
 
Bing Xu enters his 14th season at the helm of the ESU Program as he has led the Hornets to five NCAA Tournament Appearances and an overall record of 267-151 (.643).
 
LUBBOCK CHRISTIAN
Lubbock Christian enters the 2018 campaign ranked third in the Heartland Conference preseason coaches poll following a 10-17 overall record in 2017 with a 7-5 mark in league action as they advanced to the first round of the HLC Tournament.
 
LCU is guided by 14th year head coach Jennifer Lawrence who is the winningest head coach in Lady Chap history with an overall record of 305-129 (.702).
 
OPENING THE SEASON
The Lady Buffs are an incredible 32-6 in season-opening matches dating back to the 1980 season. 2018 marks the 24th straight season that the Lady Buff Classic will take place on opening weekend at the WTAMU FIeldhouse. WT is 22-2 when opening the season at the event during that time and 26-2 overall when opening the season at home during the last 38 seasons.
 
HOME DOMINANCE
West Texas A&M is fortunate to have one of the best home environments in all of NCAA Volleyball, in any division. The WTAMU Fieldhouse is more affectionately known as "The Box," is home to 19 Lone Star Conference Championships, 13 Regional Titles and three NCAA Division II National Championships. "The Box" boats one of the best home winning records in the NCAA on any level of competition. The Lady Buffs are 467-74 at The Box since the 1980 season for an incredible winning percentage of 86.2%.
 
WT HEAD COACH JASON SKOCH
WT head coach Jason Skoch, a four-time LSC Coach of the Year, is now in his 10th season at the helm of the Lady Buffs, carrying an overall career record of 393-95 (.805, 13th year) including a 257-75 (.774) mark in Canyon. Skoch has led the Lady Buffs to seven appearances in the NCAA Postseason with three South Central Regional Titles and a National Runner-Up finish in 2009.

2018 LSC PRESEASON POLL
Angelo State picked up eight of the possible 30 first place votes for a total of 304 points to sit atop of the poll followed by the Lady Buffs who received 10 first place votes for a total of 282 points. Tarleton ranked third with 277 points (seven first place) followed by Texas A&M-Commerce (four first place, 263), Texas Woman's (197), Texas A&M-Kingsville (191), Eastern New Mexico (133), MSU Texas (100), Western New Mexico (98), Cameron (80) and UT Permian Basin (one first place, 55).
 
Texas A&M-Kingsville's Madison Brabham was named the league's Preseason Offensive Player of the Year while Texas A&M-Commerce junior Shelley Chapron was tabbed the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. Angelo State's Meghan Parker was honored as the league's Preseason Setter of the Year. The poll is voted on by the league's 11 head volleyball coaches, sports information directors and select media representatives from around the region.
 
THE LONE STAR CONFERENCE
The Lone Star Conference will feature 11 volleyball playing institutions for the third straight season as each team will play a one-conference double round-robin scheduling model, in which each team plays a home and away match against each of the other teams for 20 LSC contests.
