Buffs Win 40th Game of the Season with 7-2 Win Versus Tarleton State in NCAA Regional

THE BASICS:
 
  • Score: West Texas A&M 7, Tarleton State 2
 
  • Records: West Texas A&M 40-12, Tarleton State 35-16
 
  • Location: Canyon, Texas (Wilder Park)
 
  • The Lead: Behind an outstanding complete game performance from junior Joe Corbett and timely hitting, the No. 6 West Texas A&M baseball team opened the 2018 NCAA South Central Regional with a 7-2 win over Tarleton State Thursday evening. 
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • WT made a great play in the outfield in the top of the second as Francisco Rodriguez hit a double to a diving senior Nick Canas, who alertly found the ball and fired a laser to third gunning Rodriguez for the third out of the inning.
  • The Buffs loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second on a walk, hit batsmen and infield single.Sophomore Darius Carter grounded out to short for a RBI and a 1-0 lead and TSU starter Conner Fletcher got out of the jam with a big strikeout as the Buffs left two stranded.
  • A double from senior Bodie Bryan began the bottom of the third and a great sacrifice bunt moved Bryan to third with one out.Senior Nick Canas hit a sacrifice fly to left for a 2-0 lead.WT loaded the bases with two out on a strikeout wild pitch and Fletcher got out of the jam as the Buffs left the bags full.
  • Tarleton State put two on with nobody out in the top of the fourth as WT starter Joe Corbett got a big first out by way of his third K of the game, followed by a ground out and a fly out as Corbett got out of the inning unscathed.
  • WT put two more on base in the fourth with runners at the corners, but Fletcher was able to get out of it again with a diving stop at second and throw to first by Ruben Rodriguez for the third out of the inning.
  • A walk, and a throwing error plated the third run of the game for the Buffs in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Corbett retired ten-straight from the last out of the fourth inning through the seventh inning as he fanned his sixth Texan of the game to end the top of the seventh.
  • Corbett got the first out of the eighth, but an error put Tyler Fowler on first and Hunter Hudson went opposite field for a two-run home run and a 3-2 WT lead and Hudson's second home run of the season.
  • Blake Adams belted a double off the wall and narrowly missed a game-tying home run.Corbett came back with his seventh strikeout of the game and big second out of the inning.
  • On a 2-2 count, Corbett bested Ruben Rodriguez for his eighth K of the game and got out of the inning without any further damage as TSU left a runner at third.
  • A hit batsman and a great bunt for a single up the first base line put two on for the Buffs in the bottom of the eighth with nobody out.
  • Carter showed bunt as the third baseman moved towards the shortstop and Carter hit a single to left for a 4-2 WT lead getting one of the runs back for a big insurance run, followed by a sacrifice bunt moving the runners in to scoring position.Bryan belted his eighth home run of the season, a three run home run to left for a 7-2 game, chasing Fletcher from the game as he threw 134 pitches in the game in 7.1 innings, allowing, seven runs, six earned, walked five and fanned five.
  • Corbett retired the Texans in order in the ninth for a complete game win as he set the school-record for wins in a season with his 11th victory of the year (11-2) surpassing the previous mark if ten wins set last season by former Buff Joshua Payne.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The Buffs tallied seven runs on eight hits with one error, while TSU had two runs on five hits with one error.
  • Bryan 3 for 5 with two runs scored and three RBI with the home run.Freshman Tommy Williams went 2 for 3 with two runs scored, while Carter was 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI.
  • Corbett tossed his team-leading fourth complete game of the season and first of nine innings as he allowed five hits, two runs – one earned, walked two and fanned nine.
  • Tarleton State, who hit seven home runs in the LSC Championship game, was held to five hits by five different Texans, as Hudson was 1 for 3 with a run scored and two RBI to lead the team.
  • Flanagan replaced Fletcher going 0.2 innings, allowing one hit after Fletcher exited.
  • In five trips to the NCAA Tournament, this marks the third time the Buffs have opened the tournament with a victory and first since 2015.The Buffs defeated Tarleton State in the opener in 2014 and St. Edward's in 2015.WT started the 2014 regional going 2-0 before a pair of losses ended the season.
  • WT now is 5-8 all-time in the NCAA Tournament.
  • This marked the 26th win of the season at Wilder Park, tying the school-record for home victories in a season set in 1997.
