HOW IT HAPPENENED (GAME 1):
Suka Van Gurp ledoff the game with a triple to right center field followed two batters later by a Mountain Lion throwing error to score the Curacao native to give the Lady Buffs the early 1-0 lead. The Lady Buff defense made an amazing play in the top of the second inning with no outs as a grounder to
Kourtney Coveney at third turned into a triple play (Coveney –
Alyx Cordell –
Kylee Moore) to end the inning.
Â
The Lady Buffs added to their lead in the home half of the third as Moore continued her hot start to the season as the junior lifted a two-run shot to center field for her seventh homerun of the season to stretch the WT lead to 3-0.
Â
That's all the cushion that
Kilee Halbert would need as the senior moved to 6-0 on the season, allowing no runs on six hits with no walks and eight strikeout in the complete game shutout.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2):
The Dustdevils started off the scoring in the top of the second inning as Brandi Giles lifted a two-run homerun to left center field for the early 2-0 lead. The Lady Buffs responded in the home half of the fifth inning as
Ashley Hardin drove in Coveney with a sac fly to deep left field followed by a Moore solo bomb to left center to run the junior's season total to eight to tie the game at 2-2.
Â
Shanna McBroom led off the bottom of the sixth inning with a double down the left field line followed by a Cordell sac bunt to move the runner to third, McBroom made a great read on a slow grounder to shortstop to score from third with one out to give WT the 3-2 lead.
Â
That's all that the Lady Buff pitching staff would need as Coveney entered the game and picked up her first career save, sitting down TAMIU in order in the top of the seventh. Starkey picked up the win (3-0) for the Lady Buffs in the circle, allowing two runs on two hits with one walk and four strikeouts in her 6.0 innings of work.
