THE BASICS:

  • The Lead: A pair of goals – one in each half, propelled the West Texas A&M women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory Sunday afternoon at The Pitch over visiting Fort Lewis.  Sophomore Marlene van Mourik and freshman Calista Cordero each scored goals as the Lady Buffs posted their second-straight shutout to begin the season.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Sophomore Marlene van Mourik scored her first goal of the season and eighth of her career at the 10:43 mark in the first half as she streaked down the field and shot from the left side with a save from Ali Miller, but the ball caromed back to van Mourik who scored on the rebound for a 1-0 lead.
 
  • The Skyhawks had a great opportunity ten minutes later as the Lady Buffs didn't clear the ball well off a playback to junior Courtney Dippel.Fort Lewis' Meredith Curran intercepted the pass and was all alone as Dippel came up with the save at the 20:24 mark.
 
  • van Mourik then hit the top of the crossbar at the 38:38 mark as the Lady Buffs were unable to get the rebound for a goal kick stopping another good scoring chance.
 
  • Off a free kick into the box from Fort Lewis, Dippel got hit in the air on a jump ball, but got right back up as the Lady Buffs got a goal kick 38:30 into the first half.
 
  • For the half, WT had seven shots with three on goal and the score by van Mourik. She had five shots in the first half with two on frame, while Dippel had two saves.
 
  • WT continued on the attack in the second half and scored the insurance goal at the 87:32 mark as freshman Calista Cordero scored her first collegiate goal off assists from junior Khadidra Debesette and sophomore Shanelle Arjoon. The tandem found Cordero with a long pass to the right of the goal as the keeper came out to challenge.Cordero flicked the ball past Britt Blomso for the score.
 
  • Blomso took over between the pipes at halftime for Miller.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • WT outshot Fort Lewis 14-5 and 8-3 in shots on goal.van Mourik had eight shots with five on frame and the game winner.
 
  • Cordero, Debesette and Arjoon each had two shots and Debesette's were both on goal.
 
  • Dippel recorded three saves in the game for her second shutout of the season and 10th of her career.
 
  • WT held a 4-1 lead in penalty kicks and committed 11 fouls to three for the Skyhawks.
 
  • The Lady Buffs improved to 7-1 all-time against Fort Lewis and 4-1 all-time in Canyon.WT now has outscored Fort Lewis 22-6 with three shutouts.
