  • The Lead: The West Texas A&M women's soccer team battled back from an early 1-0 deficit for a thrilling 2-1 victory over No. 11 Texas A&M-Commerce Sunday afternoon.  Freshman Calista Cordero broke a 1-1 tie in the second half for the game winner.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • Texas A&M-Commerce scored just seven minutes into the contest as Sabrina Munguia scored off an assist from Sophie Haywood as Munguia received the ball in front of the goal from Haywood, who corralled it in a group just to the right of the goal.
 
  • WT had a great look with some nifty passing as sophomore Khaline Jacob had a great shot on TAMUC keeper Caitlin Duty.
 
  • The Lions scored a goal moments later, but were called for offside.The Lady Buffs pushed the fast break following the offsides call and senior Sydney Hickerson fired a shot and Duty blocked it, but Hickerson got to the rebound and fired again for her first goal of the season at the 25:12 mark in the first half.
 
  • Dippel recorded her second huge save of the game in the 80th minute as Haywood had a breakaway, one-on-one and Dippel came up with the save moving out to the top of the 18 box to make the save.
  • On the ensuing transition, freshman Calista Cordero took a great pass from freshman Noir Hawash for a score in the 81st minute and a 2-1 lead.It was Cordero's second goal of the season and first collegiate assist for Hawash.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • The goal WT scored in the first half was just the third goal TAMUC had allowed all season and the third allowed by Duty as she entered with a 0.31 goals against average.
 
  • Hickerson's goal was the third of her career at WT.
 
  • For the half, WT had five shots with four on goal as Hickerson had two shots on goal and the equalizing goal.
 
  • TAMUC had seven shots with three on goal as Munguia had two shots on goal, the score and Haywood recorded the assist.Duty had three saves with one goal allowed.
 
  • Junior goalkeeper Courtney Dippel had two saves and allowed one goal in the first half.
 
  • The Lady Buffs had 11 shots with seven on goal as sophomore Marlene van Mourik led the way with three shots and two on frame.Cordero had two shots with one on goal and her second game winner of the season.
 
  • TAMUC had 10 shots with five on goal as Delaney Bunselmeyer led the way with three shots and two on goal.Munguia had two shots on goal and the lone score for the Lions.
 
  • The two goals WT scored on TAMUC was the most the Lions had allowed all season as Duty entered ranked 16th nationally in goals against average at 0.367 to begin the week and was 15th in save percentage at a 0.923 clip.
 
  • Dippel had four saves for the Lady Buffs and two were enormous as they were on break aways and prevented likely goals.Duty had five saves for the Lions.

  • The Lady Buffs make their first conference road trip of the season at Angelo State Sept. 29 and at UT Permian Basin on Oct. 1.A midweek game against Eastern New Mexico follows on Oct. 4, before the team returns home to host Midwestern State in the Highway 287 Challenge Series Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at The Pitch.
