  • The Lead: West Texas A&M opened the 2017 season with a thrilling 1-0 home victory over Adams State Friday evening at The Pitch.  Sophomore Samantha Silvestre scored off an assist from sophomore Marlene van Mourik in the 75th minute for the lone goal of the game.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • WT had plenty of good looks in the first half, but were unable to get anything across in the first half.University of New Mexico redshirt freshman transfer Hannah Kelley had a good look late in the half as she fired from just inside the box to the lower left corner as the ball sailed just wide.
 
  • The Lady Buffs had eight shots in the first half with three on frame as sophomores Marlene van Mourik, Kelley and sophomore Shanelle Arjoon each with two shots in the half.
 
  • Adams State didn't have a shot in the first half as goalkeeper Teagan Moore had three saves for the Grizzlies.
 
  • Midway through the second half the momentum began to shift to Adams State as the Grizzlies had five shots in the second half with one on frame.
 
  • Silvestre took the ball at midfield and went down the center and dished to van Mourik who passed it back to Silvestre for the score at the 7534 mark for the game winner.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • WT outshot ASU 18-5 and 7-1 in shots on goal for the contest as the game was played mostly in the attacking half of the field for the Lady Buffs.
 
  • Arjoon tallied a game-high seven shots with two on frame for the Lady Buffs, while van Mourik had four shots with three on goal and an assist.Silvestre scored on her lone attempt.
 
  • Junior goalkeeper Courtney Dippel had one save in the game and earned the win for her 17th of her career (17-14-1) and ninth career shutout.
 
  • Moore had six saves for the Grizzles and five different ASU players each had one shot.
 
  • WT improved to 4-0-0 all-time against Adams State marking the third shutout in the four victories against the Grizzlies.
 
 
UP NEXT:
 
  • The Lady Buffs continue at home on Sunday against Fort Lewis at 1 p.m. at The Pitch.
 
  • WT is 6-1 all-time against Fort Lewis, but FLC won the last meeting 1-0 in Canyon on Sept. 10, 2010.
 
  • Fort Lewis tied Eastern New Mexico, 2-2 in Portales, N.M. Friday afternoon.
