WT Volleyball Hosts the BritKare Lady Buff Classic This Weekend in Canyon

CANYON, Texas –
The Lady Buffs will open up their 2017 campaign on September 1-2 as they host the Britkare Lady Buff Classic inside of the WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" in Canyon. WT will face off with Southwestern Oklahoma State, Colorado State-Pueblo, Adams State and St. Mary's.

- SCOUTING THE FIELD
SOUTHWESTERN OKLAHOMA STATE
The Bulldogs are led by sixth year head coach Josh Collins who led SWOSU to an appearance in the GAC Tournament the last two seasons.
 
SWOSU is coming off of a 14-17 overall record in 2016 with a 9-7 mark in GAC play as they advanced to the Second Round of the GAC Tournament before falling to Southeastern Oklahoma State. WT is 12-1 all-time against SWOSU, including 6-1 in Canyon.
 
The Bulldogs are returning seven letterwinners from the 2016 team including a pair of seniors in outside DeLayni Fine and defensive specialist Lindsey McCauley.
 
COLORADO STATE-PUEBLO
CSU-Pueblo is led by second year head coach Jill Muhe who led the ThunderWolves to their second straight RMAC Tournament in 2016.
 
The ThunderWolves registered an overall record of 12-16 during the 2016 campaign with an overall mark of 10-8 in the RMAC as they fell in the opening round of the conference tournament to Metro State in straight sets. WT is a perfect 7-0 all-time against the ThunderWolves with three of those coming in Canyon.
 
CSU-Pueblo returns nine letterwinners from last year's team including Caitlin Broadwell, a 2016 All-RMAC Second Team Selection on the outside.
 
ADAMS STATE
Adams State is led by 12th year head coach Lindy Mortensen who enters 2017 with an overall record of 169-166.
 
The Grizzlies are coming off a 16-15 overall record in 2016 as they went 11-7 in the RMAC before falling in the first round of the event to Colorado School of Mines in a five-set thriller. The Lady Buffs are 8-3 all-time against the Grizzlies including 6-2 in Canyon.
 
Adams State returns 13 letterwinners from last year's team including AVCA All-Region honoreee Mallory Grimsrud and All-RMAC Honorable Mention selection Hannah Atkinson.
 
ST. MARY'S
The Rattlers are led by first year head coach Callaway Logan who came to San Antonio after four successful seasons at St. Thomas University (Florida).
 
St. Mary's is coming off of a 14-14 campaign in 2016 as they went 6-8 in the Heartland Conference. The Lady Buffs are 16-2 all-time against the Rattlers including a perfect 8-0 in Canyon.
 
The Rattlers welcome back seven letterwinners from last year's team including Tarin Grace who led the team in kills (248) in 2016.
 
OPENING THE SEASON
The Lady Buffs are an incredible 31-6 overall in season-opening contests dating back to the 1980 season. 2017 marks the 23rd straight season that the Lady Buff Classic will take place on opening weekend at the WTAMU FIeldhouse in Canyon, WT is 21-2 when opening the season at the Lady Buff Classic during that time and 25-2 overall when opening the season at home during the last 37 seasons.
 
HOME DOMINANCE
West Texas A&M is fortunate to have one of the best home environments in all of NCAA Volleyball, in any division. The WTAMU Fieldhouse is more affectionately known as "The Box," is home to 19 Lone Star Conference Championships, 13 Regional Titles and three NCAA Division II National Championships. The WTAMU Fieldhouse "The Box" boats one of the best home winning records in the NCAA on any level of competition. The Lady Buffs are 453-72 at The Box since the 1980 season for an incredible winning percentage of 86.4%.
 
WT HEAD COACH JASON SKOCH
WT head coach Jason Skoch, a four-time Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year, is now in his ninth season at the helm of the Lady Buffs, carrying an overall career record of 370-80 (.822, 12th year) including a 234-61 (.795) mark in Canyon. Skoch has led the Lady Buffs to seven appearances in the NCAA Postseason with three South Central Regional Titles and a National Runner-Up finish in 2009.

2017 LSC PRESEASON POLL
Defending South Central Regional Champion Angelo State picked up 21 of the possible 32 first place votes for a total of 340 points to sit atop of the poll followed by Tarleton State (9 first place, 326), Texas A&M-Kingsville (1 first place, 267), Texas A&M-Commerce (236), West Texas A&M (1 first place, 233), Eastern New Mexico (204), Western New Mexico (153), Texas Woman's (120), Midwestern State (106), UT Permian Basin (74) and Cameron (53) to round out the poll.
 
Tarleton State's Hailey Roberts was named the LSC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year while Eastern New Mexico's Andrea Aguilar (Defensive) and Meghan Parker of Angelo State (Setter) were honored with preseason accolades. The poll is voted on by the league's nine head volleyball coaches, sports information directors and select media representatives from around the region.
