CANYON, Texas – The #3 Buffaloes of West Texas A&M dropped the series finale to Arkansas-Fort Smith, 11-4, on Saturday afternoon at Wilder Park in front of 208 fans. The Buffs went 13-for-37 from the plate with three doubles and a home run but left 13 runners on base. Justin McAllister (1-2) was given his second loss of the season after going 2/3 of an inning giving up five hits and four earned runs. With the loss, WT drops to 26-8 while the Lions improve to 20-15.
The Buffs will return to Lone Star Conference action next weekend with a trip to Lawton, Oklahoma for a four-game series against Cameron. The first game of the series is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 13.
Buffs starting pitcher Noah Draper got out of a jam in the top of the second after walking two batters to put runners on first and second with one out. He then proceeded to strike out the next two batters that he faced to keep the game tied at 0-0.
The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the third after Logan Allen singled up the middle with one out. He advanced to third on a stolen base and error on the throw. He came around to score on a grounder to short from Drew Duncan.
The Buffs had to get themselves out of another jam in the top of the four after Draper loaded the bases with two outs. Dominic Yearego entered the game and got Brandan Warner to ground out to Luis Amaro out first as the Lions stranded another three runners.
WT took their first lead of the game in the bottom half of the inning, 2-1, as Armaro led the inning off with a single to right followed by a double to deep right center from Troy LaBrie to put runners on second and third with no outs. Amaro was picked off at third followed by a two run opposite field home run by John Baiada on the next pitch. It was the senior catcher's second home run of the season and first of the series.
UAFS retook the lead in the top of the fifth inning scoring two runs on three hits. The Buffs tied the game back up in the bottom half of the inning as Nick Canas doubled to right center with one out before coming around to score on an error by the shortstop on a hard hit grounder from LaBrie.
The Lions scored four in the top the seventh to retake the lead, 7-3, on five hits including a double and triple. The Buffs missed a chance to put some runs up in the bottom of the eighth after LaBrie started the inning with a double to left center followed by a walk by Baiada. Chad Brown loaded the bases with no outs with a single to the left side of the infield. Adam Adkins and Blake Weaver struck out swinging and Jimmy Cubillos flew out to deep center as WT's runner left on-base total reached double digits with 10.
UAFS scored four more in the top of the ninth to extend their lead to eight runs, 11-3. The Buffs showed some fight in the bottom of the inning as Canas and Christian Loya both singled up the middle with one out. After a LaBrie strikeout, Baiada loaded the bases with a walk before Steven Weber picked up his first RBI of the series with a single to right to plate Canas.
