14 Long Balls Lift the #10 Lady Buffs Past UT Permian Basin in a Lone Star Conference Sweep

ODESSA, Texas – The #10 Lady Buffs of West Texas A&M showed their team power on Saturday afternoon as they connected on 14 homeruns including eight in the series finale as WT rolled past the Falcons of UT Permian Basin to complete a Lone Star Conference series sweep at the UTPB Softball Complex in Odessa, Texas. The Lady Buffs move to 29-6 (14-4 LSC) while the Falcons fall to 5-31 (2-16 LSC) on the season.
 
The Lady Buffs step out of Lone Star Conference action on Tuesday night as they host the Lady Chaps of Lubbock Christian for a regional matchup at Schaeffer Park with first pitch set for 7 p.m. on Faculty & Staff Appreciation Night in Canyon.
 
GAME 1 - #10 West Texas A&M 17, UT Permian Basin 3 (5 Innings)
The Lady Buffs wasted little time starting off the scoring in the top of the first inning as Allie Smith doubled home Shanna McBroom with one out followed by a Kylee Moore RBI single up the middle for the early 2-0 lead. WT added to their lead in the top of the second inning as Shea Ibrahim drove in Brittany Cruz with a sacrifice fly in foul territory down the left field line to run the score to 3-0.
 
The Falcons got on the board in the home half of the second inning as Cindy Juarez led off the frame with a solo homerun to center field to cut the lead to 3-1. The Lady Buffs responded in a big way in the top of the third inning as the powerful WT lineup connected on five homeruns in the frame (Moore, Emilee Baker, Alyx Cordell, McBroom, Smith) to drive in seven runs in the inning to take a 10-1 lead.
 
The Lady Buffs used the long ball again in the top of the fourth inning as Baker connected on her second homerun of the day with a two-run shot to center field followed later in the inning by a Cordell double and a Falcon error to score another run, Ashley Hardin doubled to center field to score Ibrahim to extend the WT lead to 14-1.
 
UTPB cut into the lead in the home half of the fourth inning with a Daisy Aguilar RBI single to center field with a Lady Buff error to score a pair and cut the lead to 14-3, WT responded in the top of the fifth inning as Ibrahim doubled to center field with two outs and the bases loaded to drive in three RBI and give the Lady Buffs the 17-3 lead.
 
Alexis Alfonso (8-1) picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Buffs, giving up three runs on five hits with no walks and no strikeouts in her 3.2 innings of work while Chelsea Skipper finished off the final inning and a third, allowing no runs on no hits.
 
GAME 2 - #10 West Texas A&M 15, UT Permian Basin 1 (5 Innings)
The Lady Buffs used the long ball in the series finale to take the early lead as Hardin connected on a two-run shot to left with one out in the first inning for the early 2-0 lead. WT added to their lead in the top of the third inning as Hardin started the frame with a walk followed by a Smith two-run blast at 4-0, Baker added to her big afternoon with her third homerun of the day as the sophomore launched a two-run shot to left field followed two batters later by a Cordell solo shot to left center for her second homer of the day at 7-0.
 
The Falcons got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning as Adrianna Berzoza lifted a leadoff solo homerun to left field followed by a single to right field before Kilee Halbert forced a double play ball to Shayne Starkey at second and a slow roller to the circle to end the frame with WT leading 7-1.
 
WT continued to roll offensively in the top of the fifth inning as Cordell connected on her third long ball of the day with a two-run shot to left field with one out as the Canyon product finished off a huge day that saw the freshman hit her first three homeruns of her WT career. Sierra Gentry got in on the action with a two-run pinch hit shot to left field with one out followed by a Hardin walk and a Smith two-run bomb to center at 13-1. The derby continued two batters later as Baker connected on her fourth homerun of the afternoon with a two-run shot to center for the 15-1 lead.
 
Halbert picked up the win (15-3) for the Lady Buffs, giving up one run on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in her 14th complete game of the season. The Dalhart product picked up her 50th career victory to move into second place on the WT career list.
