CANYON, Texas – West Texas A&M head football coach Hunter Hughes announced his first recruiting class Wednesday on National Signing Day as the Buffs inked 32 players with 13 on defense, 18 on offense and one kicker.
"I am excited about the players who have chosen to join us, and feel like this is the place for them academically and athletically as we turn this program back to where it should be – competing for championships," Hughes said. "I think the character and work ethic of these young men will fit with the work ethic and character that our returning players demonstrating in their workouts this spring."
On offense, Hughes signed five offensive linemen and five running backs, along with four wide receivers, two tight ends, one fullback and one quarterback. Hughes had a nice blend of Panhandle players with two from Amarillo High School (QB, Reagan Hill / WR, Renick Hill), one from Randall High School (WR, Cody Gattis), one from Clarendon (OL, Seth Greer), one from Stratford (OL, Parker Hanna) and one from Lubbock Monterrey High School (WR, Kailan Noseff).
Defensively, the Buffs added the services of six linebackers, three defensive linemen and four defensive backs. Out of the Panhandle, one hails from Dumas (LB, Derek Ditto), one from Plainview (LB, Wrangler Haresnape), and from Abernathy (DL, Xavier Rivera). WT added a kicker from Perryton named Luis Torres.
In all 31 of the 32 players are from Texas with one from New Mexico in tight end Adam Cook (Rio Rancho, N.M./Cleveland HS).
Hughes, hired as the 28th coach in WT football history in December, 2016, brings a wealth of experience and expertise as he served as defensive coordinator at Colorado State-Pueblo the last nine years winning a national championship in 2014 with the ThunderWolves.
The Buffs have an exciting seven-game home schedule in 2017 beginning with three-straight home games and four of the first five at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium. The season gets underway Sept. 2 as 2016 NCAA playoff participant Azusa Pacific visits, followed by Colorado State-Pueblo (Sept. 9) and UT Permian Basin (Sept. 16). Following a trip to Tarleton State (Sept. 23), WT returns home to close out September with the Annual Wagon Wheel Game against Eastern New Mexico Sept. 30.
