  • The Lead: Down by as many as 26 early in the second half, the No. 8 West Texas A&M men's basketball team came roaring back over the final ten minutes of the half coming up short in a 106-100 loss at No. 13 UT Permian Basin.  Despite the first setback of the season, the Buffs overcame the huge deficit and had a chance down the stretch for the comeback.  Senior David Chavlovich had a team-high 30 points with 24 in the second half and junior Ryan Quaid had a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Buffs had an early 4-0 lead, but a 6-0 run by the Falcons gave UTPB its first lead of the game through the first four minutes.
  • The Falcons then went on a 13-0 run for a 21-10 lead with 11 minutes left in the first half and extended the lead to a game-high 14 at 29-15. 
  • Since the 11:52 mark, UTPB outscored WT 17-5 for a 31-15 lead with 7:14 left in the half.  
  • Junior Gach Gach buried WT's first triple for 33-20 deficit with six minutes left in the half, as it was the first trey by the Buffs in the game as they missed their first nine from range.
  • UTPB led 53-33 at halftime.
  • Both teams struggled out of the gate in the second half as WT was 2 of 7 from the field and 0 of 3 from range, while UTPB was 2 of 8 and 0 2 from distance.  With 15:21 left, the Buffs had been unable to cut into the deficit trailing 57-37. 
  • A triple from senior Jordan Evans cut the UTPB lead to 18 with 6:33 left at 86-68l.  WT then used a triple from senior David Chavlovich and a pair of free throws cutting the deficit to 15 at 88-73 with 5:44 remaining.
  • Chavlovich stole the inbounds pass in the UPTB backcourt for an easy layup cutting the deficit to 89-75 with 4:39 left. 
  • WT went on its biggest run of the game as it outscored UTPB 14-9 for a 98-89 deficit with 1:25 left as it marked the closest WT had been since midway through the first half.
  • The Buffs valiant effort pulled the team within six at 106-100 on a triple from junior Victor Lewis in the final ten seconds.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • WT shot a season-low 24.2 percent from the field in the first half on 8 of 33 from the floor.  The Buffs were just 1 of 16 from beyond the arc (.063), while going 16 of 20 from the line. 
  • Reigning LSC Defensive Player of the Week, junior Ryan Quaid, had 10 points and seven rebounds in the first half.  The Buffs had 19 rebounds in the half.
  • UTPB had 21 points from James McPherson in the first half on 7 of 12 from the field and 3 of 5 from beyond the arc as the Falcons shot 57.5 percent for the half om 23 of 40.  The Falcons were 3 of 8 from beyond the arc and 4 of 6 from the line. 
  • The Falcons had 10 points from Daeshon Francis and 10 from Josh Morris.  UTPB held a 34-14 lead in points in the paint.
  • Over the final 11:55, UTPB outscored WT 39-10 for the 53-33 halftime deficit. 
  • The 20-point deficit was the largest of the season for WT both through the first half and at any point in a game.  The previous largest halftime deficit was six at Colorado State-Pueblo and the previous largest deficit was 14, also at CSU-Pueblo.
  • The 53 points by UTPB in the half was the most against WT.
  • For the game, WT shot just 39.7 percent on 29 of 73, but went 21 of 40 in the second half for 52.5 percent.  The Buffs were 12 of 40 from beyond the arc after going 1 of 16 in the first half and was 30 of 38 from the line for a 78.9 clip.
  • UTPB shot 54.2 percent on 39 of 72, while going 5 of 17 from beyond the arc and 23 of 36 from the line.  The Falcons had a 50-40 lead in rebounding and led 56-28 in points in the paint.
  • UTPB's James McPherson had a game-high 31 points, with five triples and 10 made field goals, while Sammy Allen had 23 points and 14 rebounds. 
  • WT outscored UTPB 67-53 in the second half and has scored 90 or more points in seven of nine games this season.  It was the third game hitting the century mark for WT this season.
  • The game marked the first time since a two overtime loss at Texas A&M-Commerce on Jan. 21, 2017, where both teams scored 100 or more points as TAMUC won 104-103. 
  • The 106 points was the most allowed since 108 at Midwestern State on Jan. 14, 1999.
  • It was the first time with both teams scoring 100 more points in regulation, since a 105-101 victory over Central Oklahoma in the NCAA Regional on Mar. 7, 1998.
