  • The Lead: Behind a team-high 28 points from senior David Chavlovich, the No. 8 West Texas A&M men's basketball team battled back from an early 11-0 deficit for a thrilling 82-72 victory over Lubbock Christian Saturday evening for a school-record 26th-straight home win at the First United Bank Center.  Chavlovich entered the game 28 points shy of 2,000 and hit the magic number on the dot.
 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED:
 
  • The Chaps came ready to play and opened an 11-0 lead as WT opened the game 0 for 8 as a triple from junior Gach Gach got the Buffs on the board with 14:49 left and used an 11-4 run for a 15-11 deficit with 12:22 left in the first half.
  • Chavlovich buried his first of five triples for WT's first lead of the game at 18-17 with 10:28 left in the half.
  • WT increased the run to 27-6 on a layup from senior Jordan Evans with 5:51 left for a 27-17 lead since the 11-0 start by LCU.
  • Junior Ryan Quaid gave WT its largest lead of the half with a layup with 5:04 left at 29-18.  The Buffs settled for the 36-25 lead at half.
  • An "and one" by Chavlovich with 15:10 left pushed the WT lead to 49-37, but back-to-back triples from LCU cut the deficit to six.
  • Chavlovich had the answer with a triple at the other end
  • An 8-0 run by the Chaps tied the game at 57 with 8:48 left, but Chavlovich had the answer again at the other end.
  • LCU took the lead on a triple from Brennan Fowler at 60-59 with 7:09 left, but freshman Gaige Prim answered at the other end. 
  • Following the fourth tie of the game, Prim hit a jumper in the paint for a 65-63 lead as the Buffs went on for a 13-2 run capped with a triple from Chavlovich with 2:11 left and a 76-65 lead.
  • Following a bucket from Fowler, Chavlovich hit the 2,000 point mark with driving layup with 1:24 left and a 78-67 lead. 
  • WT settled for the 82-72 win as it snapped a three-game skid against Lubbock Christian.
 
 
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
 
  • For the half, WT shot 50 percent on 13 of 26, while going 5 of 10 from beyond the arc and 5 of 7 from the line.  Quaid had a team-high 12 points as the lone player in double figures.
  • Lubbock Christian went 11 of 25 from the field and was 1 of 5 from beyond the arc.  The Chaps were 2 of 4 from the line.  
  • LCU held a 17-13 lead in rebounding and had an 18-14 lead in points in the paint.  Stephen Lennox had nine points to lead the team on 4 of 4 from the field with a free throw.
  • Chavlovich had just five points at halftime for the Buffs.
  • For the game, Chavlovich went 11 of 17 from the field, 5 of 6 from beyond the arc and recorded six assists with no turnovers and 28 points leading five Buffs in double figures.
  • Quaid added 19 points and eight rebounds, while three Buffs each had 10 points.
  • For the game, WT shot 50.8 percent from the field on 30 of 59, while going 10 of 19 from beyond the arc (.526) and struggled at the line going 12 of 21 for a .571 clip. 
  • LCU was led by a game-high 30 points from Fowler on 13 of 18 with 11 rebounds and six blocks.  Lennox added 19 points and Texas A&M-Commerce transfer and leading scorer Isaac Asrat had 12 points as he entered the game averaging 21.7.  WT junior Gach Gach locked him down defensively Saturday night as Asrat was 3 of 8 from the field with one triple and 5 of 5 from the line.
  • The Chaps shot 51.9 percent for the game and 59.3 percent in the second half on 27 of 52 for the contest.  LCU was 4 of 12 from range and 14 of 22 from the line.  LCU held a 38-30 lead in rebounding, but WT held a 15-2 lead in points off turnovers as LCU had 14 miscues to just seven for WT.
  • WT improved to 17-5 all-time against LCU and WT head coach Tom Brown now is 2-3 against the Chaps.
  • The Buffs won their 26th-straight home game dating back to the 2015-16 season, which is tied for fourth-longest in the nation.

  • The Buffs have a break for finals before heading to Las Vegas, Nev., for a pair of games Dec. 18-19 against Southern Indiana and Rollins College.
